Guest
What is involved in making a FWD B6 A4 avant tdi a quattro car? Is it as simple as getting a quattro drivetrain from the flywheel back? The investigations I've done so far seem to say that the rear suspension setup is the same for both FWD and quattro. I'm expecting that a new gearbox, rear driveshaft, rear diff, rear wheelhub assemblies and a new exhaust for starters. Possibly to add to that list being a new fueltank, and new gearstick mechanism. I know that the fwd passats (b5/b5.5) need major floorpan and mountpoint changes with much welding and a new fueltank to add the rwd components to the car. If the conversion requires that much work, it'll be shelved. The search function shows up nothing useful, neither does google. I'm just thinking of this as something to do to my car in the next year if it doesn't cost too much money or time. I know that the easier route is just buy an A4 with quattro, but I like this car and it has been treated well in its life. Anyone got any tips or experience? Chrisg
The prices of the parts you list will be substantial even secondhand. you need to forget this, sell what you have and buy a quattro version
shark_90
Basically you're not far off from my understanding. Not sure about mounting points and you will need the fuel tank unfortunately.. but nothing's impossible
Mook
It would be a massive project and not something I would want to take on without massive commitment, in terms of time and money
Guest
That goes a long way towards why nobody seems to have done it already. Might be worth my looking out for a car with a missing or non-working engine for cheap, and transplant all of the missing bits from my own into it, or source an engine for it. Thanks for the answers! Chav
Or just buy a different car. Can't believe you're even considering it: cost to change car = much cheaper! time to change car = many times quicker! you can inject the cash you would have spent into getting a better specd/lower mileage new car too. plus taking cars apart and putting them back together doesn't usually give you a car as fault-free as from the factory! Are you going to convert it to a cabriolet next too? I think they do a kit on e-bay for about £50!

paul_tdi
I actually looked into this on a b5 platform and was advised that it could not be done as the rear setup of the body/chassis would not take the rear diff.
