I hate to be the bearer of bad news for all of you with big flash HD sets but this is actually designed into the game. I've seen it mentioned on the Bungie.net forums. Ignored it at the time, but apparently its designed to add borders during split screen mode. I think its something to do with keeping the framerate up. Will try to find the thread.

[Nope no luck. They seem to be having problems with the forum searches. There are however numerous posts about it and several suggested reasons for it e.g. framerate, retaining aspect ratios, etc. Couldn't find an official word from Bungie themselves, but its clearly an issue with the game and not your setup. Hope that helps.]

makes sense, i suppose if there a two players on HD the frame rate will drop because of the extra processing power being used. Does anyone know if it does this on standard def TV's?
