river
Hi, Nice old motor ! They'll all be rusted to buggery by now though.... Not this one. No rust anywhere. A bit was cut out from the tailgate (where they are prone to rust) and was metal-finished a couple of years ago. seeyuzz river
river
Hi, For 1976-1977, the Liftback was released with 18R-GU Twincam engine with a Yamaha head and running gear. This engine produced significantly more power than the 18R-G. Peak power was about 100 kW @ 7400rpm at the rear wheels. Ummm... nope... The 18R-G came out in 1973, with the RA25GT. It was, and always has been the most powerful stock 18R-G made by Toyota. It had 9.7:1 compression ratio and zero emission controls. It had the most agressive cams of the 18R-G series, though the smallest ports. The cylinder head is stamped "210" for the 18R-G. The 18R-GR used an air-pump as the first attempt to offer some emission control. This engine had the same comp ratio as the 18R-G, but it also used a slightly different head and cams. The head was stamped "230" Then came the 18R-GU which is the least powerful. It had its comp ratio reduced to 8.3:1, a fair bit of emission controls on the carbies and a diferent head. The head is stamped "250" on this engine, and it made about 120bhp. In 1978 the final 18R-G engine was the 18R-GEU, which had "270" stamped on the head. It had the best head design and biggest valves, 8.7:1 comp ratio and was EFI. It generated 130bhp. The 18R-GU and 18R-GEU, with the lower compression, are often used for turbo set-ups, where a strong well built unit will put over 200kw at the rear wheels, and a few have pulled 250kW at the rear wheels. The original 18R-G is very rare, and usually are kept original as they had the best sound and there is nothing like hearing one of these NA babies screaming at high revs - with a good throaty exhaust system and the induction noise from quad throats, it is music to the ears. seeyuzz river

river
Hi, Thanks for the comments. I'll get some other pics of the car up for you. In regards to the previous post I made, regarding the 18R-G. the power breakdown is basically.... 18R-G => 145bhp 18R-GR => 140bhp 18R-GU => 120bhp 18R-GEU => 130bhp Also Yamaha did the head design for all the 18R-G and 2T-G engines. Some heads have Yamaha stamped on them and other heads have Toyota stamped on them, but they are the same heads. There is no specialised Yamaha head. seeyuzz river
Tipex
Love to see some more pics, I do like these old toyotas. Not realy in quite the same league as yours, but I'd love an old Celica Supra one day.
theduisbergkid
Welcome to TSN River, a very nice old car you have there, nice to see something different on this forum, I wonder what it's like to drive !
river
Hi, By old Supra I assume you mean the MA61 model, circa 84-86? Yes, they are a nice car and, in my opinion, the nicest looking of the Supras. There are a few modded ones over here, where they are running a 7M-GTE for a good 200-300kW at the rear wheels, and a few with 2JZ engines, which pull 350-400kW at the rear wheels. In regards to how the RA25GT drives... it's great. The clutch is firm, but not tiring, the gearbox is still tight and notchy. Handling is great. It has sway bars and stiffer suspension. She handles like she is on rails. I do worry a little when driving around the city in case some dunderclump hits me, but hey, the car is there to drive and the day I am too worried to drive it wil be the day I sell it. Seats are comfortble and firm. Steering is light and direct. Suspension is firm, but not bone jarring. Her best gear is 2nd and 3rd gear, where you can really dump it and get some good acceleration up to the 7500rpm red line. But I rarely go above 5500rpm as there is no need to - and redline means possible engine damage. Top speed is about 220kph and the standing 400m is 15.4 seconds (I think. I need to check that). Best fun is on winding roads, where going up and down the cogs and steering around corners is wonderful fun. It laps up that sort of driving, as do I. It gets a lot of looks and attention. I think its mainly due to the fender mirrors which are all but non-existant in Australia. Also, being old it gets some looks, and the rear lights are different.... and the fluted bonnet. Has no ABS or active suspension or other gizmos and gadgets to assist the driver or vehicle... it's just the car, me, and the open road.. the sound of carbs sucking the air. It doesn't get any better than that! I'll check my pics album later and put some more shots up here... the rear, interior, etc. Also got some pics of it beside and RA28/29 to show the similar, yet sublte differences between the models. seeyuzz river
Tipex
It's this shape I like, I think it was the first celica Supra available in the UK, but not actually a mk1. Not sure though, as I dont know much about them, had 2 MR2 Turbos though and they were great!
river
Hi, That's the MA61 model. Yes, I think it is the best looking of the Supras. The original Supra, IIRC, was the MA45, which looked like a slightly overgrown Celica RA40 model.. circa 79-80. It was not a pretty car, but there are those that think they are ugly-cool. seeyuzz river

What good taste you have! lol Of all the cars I've had over the years, and I've had quite a few, the MR2 Turbo's were my favourites. One was light blue/silver with minor engine mods, but massive brakes and a track set up suspension which was a nightmare on the road, it was way to stiff and the front skipped over bumps, but was awesome on track. The other one (my favourite) was a black TRD edition tuned to about 350ish BHP, I sold it to a mate eventually and he sold it to his brother who still has it. fizzbitt
Please tell me it werent a factory TRD... otherwise i will just have to spit at you now in envy.. lol BTW - out of all my past cars including a modded GT4, the rev 3 tubby in my sig was by far the most fun! Knowing that i could crap myself without fail on any bend coming on boost was just a mad rush!

Knowing that i could crap myself without fail on any bend coming on boost was just a mad rush! I'm afraid it was a factory TRD, I understand they are quite rare, I went to a big MR2 gathering at the MIRA test track in 2000, and I think mine was one of only 2 TRD's in attendance, out of literally thousands of MR2's. Being based on a revision 2, the TRD was, frankly, frightening if you pushed a bit hard in the corners, it felt like it would never let go, then suddenly the back would just go, you had to be very very quick to catch it! Sadly although my mates brother still has the car, it's seen better days, the bodywork was vandalised and covered in scratches, and it's wearing quite a high mileage now and has been laid up in a garage for a number of years with it's engine in bits, he thought he knew how far he could push the engine with various electronic gizmo's and a bleed valve, and predictably about 5 minutes later, it started blowing lots of smoke and using expensive amounts of oil. He reckons he's going to fix it, and has indeed bought forged pistons etc (though that was about 3 years ago), but personally I doubt it'll ever see the road again Edited January 25, 2009 by Tipex

I believe there were only about 25+ that came out the TRD factory in various engine specs ranging from the basic 220 up to 500bhp. And if your telling me he could afford to buy a TRD MR2 but couldn't afford a electronic boost controller then he needs a slap. To use a bleed vale on a genuine TRD... man... river
Hi, Okay, as promised, here are some pics. This is the RA25 and my yellow RA28. The RA25 is stock and on Historic registration now, but the RA28 is on normal rego and is slowly being modded. The RA28 has lowered suspension and coil-overs, new rubbers and steering, larger front sway bay and rear sway bar fitted. Some nice 16-inch Simmons custom wheels. Currently a turbo'd 18R-GUE engine is being fully built, with a turbo (to replace the oil buring 18R-C engine it currently has). The engine is being built to take 25 pounds boost, but for drive-ability and reliability it will be only running around 12 pounds, which is about 220-240hp. If anything, it is interesting to see the JDM 1973 liftback next to the 1977 export Celica, so you can see the differences. seeyuzz river
