Mook
All of our diesel cars have always had exhaust tailpipes that point towards the ground, but why? I can't figure out a sensible answer to this one, especially as a lot of diesel cars like BMWs and Audis now have their exhaust pipes sticking straight out the back, which they never used to. There's quite a few cars around as well that look like their tailpipes point straight out, but these are really dummies and the exhuast is pointed towards the ground - followed a Mazda 6 to work this morning like this - you can notice a lot more when it's cold and you can see the fumes coming out. So why do the manufacturers do this on petrol cars?
bigface
is it to do with smoke? only guessing but i see plenty of cars with the straight pipes pretty dirty around the pipe
Ska
2nd that the soot gets all over the back bumper and it may be an attempt to draw less attension from on lookers to the black crap thats comming out.
cruiser647
I think it is a smoke issue. Diesel smoke is heavier and more visible, so send it downwards first, let the air under the car dissipate it a bit. Now with the fancy low smoke diesels, that is less of an issue, and probably also for aesthetics
330dcoupe
My whole car is let down by two skinny pointy down exhausts. Considering that it's only 3 years old and BMW were actually installing chrome tailpipes for the 530d sports - it kinda pisses me off that I didn't get any! steelwind101
I have noticed some D efforts have the chrome pipe but the acutal exhaust fires downwards. The silver bendie part is a just for show. Common on Peugeots and a few other makes.
theduisbergkid
I think it is so the muck from the Diesel exhaust doesn't stain the plastic bodywork.

[/ QUOTE ] I don't think it is something you can specify on spec dude,. I know all the new 3 series with a 3.0 litre diesel now come with a double chrome tailpipe exit (The SE model just looks wrong!) but I have seen 5 series 3 litre diesels with both the chrome and the downward exits. strange. [/ QUOTE ] I'm sure when I looked at one as a company car nearly 4 years ago, the exhaust particulate filter was an extra-cost option on diesels and if you opted for that on a Sport model, you got straight tailpipes. Could well be imagining it though.......
Mouse
What's funny about diesels is you can tell when the driver boots it as you are engulfed in a puff of black smoke
bazza_g
[ QUOTE ] What's funny about diesels is you can tell when the driver boots it as you are engulfed in a puff of black smoke [/ QUOTE ] not mine, it has a DPF which removes all the soot so even when pushed hard no black crap from the exhaust - and my tailpipes point straight back and not downwards

GTI_Boi
The homologation rules state that diesel exhausts can't direct the fumes towards the pavement - so whilst there's nothing to stop them pointing straight out (as we've all seen) I guess that by pointing downwards there's a better chance of them not going towards pedestrians?
