It is worth just putting the handbrake on the first notch to prove that the Haldex is not working properly to see if it is any worse. I'm sure a Haldex fault would bring the ESP light on permanently.

I have tested that (handbrake on / handnbrake off) and can't feel any diference.

Hi,

I own an 8L S3, and I'm pretty sure my haldex is not working, I can spin easely on first gear.

VAG-COM returns no errors.

What can be wrong?

Thanks in advance.

QuilloMan.

Do you get a response from the Haldex controller?

If not, maybe someone has removed the fuse so the car wont throw an error on VAGCOM autoscan

I'm using the full licensed version. Also I have taken the car to my local garage (non audi) and they tested it with a MagnetyMarelly device and found no error. I was there and he test every actuator on haldex and ABS.

I tend to think this is not an electronics problem.

I have read somewhere that rear differential can cause this problem.

Could it be the rear differential or even the haldex cluth discs?

P.D. I change haldex oil and filter every 30000Km (20000miles).

The haldex and diff are in one unit, if the diff is OK but the haldex clutch has gone your gonna need a new one, the haldex is not a servicable unit, you can only change the oil and filter which you have already done.

Are you sure you have a quattro and not a FWD 150 or 180 blush.gif

Do you have access to a 4 post lift.

I would be easy to lift up the car, leaving the wheels free, and see if they all rotate when the engine is turned on and put into gear.

4 wheel drive should engage almost immediately, as it would detect the front wheels spinning, and the rears not, engaging haldex to correct it.

Thanks for all the responses.

I can give a try to your idea Paul-S3, although I'm quite sure it is not working.

Do you think it can be the haldex clutch?

I bought the car with 45000 milles and I'm not sure the previous owner made the haldex maintenace properly (not shown on maintenance book) and I made the first service to haldex with 56000 milles. Haldex has been working until now (75000 milles).

Its hard to tell as usually if they fail, they throw an error, which is picked up on diagnostics.

Servicing for the haldex has always been an extra to the usual car servicing.

It is advised to service as such..

20K miles oil

40k miles oil and filter

60K miles oil

80k miles oil and filter and so on.

So at worst, if it was never serviced, its missed 2 oil changes and 1 filter. If this is the case it may well have caused some problems?

Here is how the haldex works. Haldex website

Ive got the same problem with my Golf V6 4Motion, infact have for about 3yrs now and still havent got the bottom of it. Its had a whole new Haldexcoupling/diff assey, new controller, new brake and handbrake switch, oil and filter change. No fault codes!

will be interested to see what Audi say, Keep us all posted.

Oh here is the link to my forum thread about it, if anyone want a read.

Well, a week later I have recovered my loved S3. It seems that some part was not in stock and so the long wait.

In fact the problem was in the electric precharge pump on the haldex. As I tell you in the first post it shows no error on vag-com.

For those that doubt about 4WD or Haldex, after 2 month without I can say it makes a BIG BIG difference.
