It's more than likely to be the MAF sensor (a.k.a. Mass Air Flow Meter). This measures the volume of air being drawn in and adjusts the fuelling accordingly.

They're a really common problem on most every VW. They cost about £80 to replace and this is a 5 minute job (although you'll doubtless be charged an hour by your VW garage or specialist).

One other, less likely cause is one of the air pipes springing a leak. Happened on Mrs Mook's GT TDI.
