Ideal CSL camber settings

I think this thread should be made a sticky for easy finding.

I had a discussion with Simpsons a couple of days back to find out the ideal settings. Please note this is with the stock mounts. You can buy more adjustable after makret ones which will give you a further degree of camber.

Front

give as much negative camber as the mounts will allow. This should be around -2 degs. Please measure once done and let me know. All CSL’s are different.

the passenger side wheel will be able to get more negative camber than the right. Measure the angle on the driver side, do the same on passenger side.

Check toe after. There should be 2 mill toe out on the front

Rear

leave camber at the back standard. This I believe should be no more than 1.25 degs

The toe out should be between 1 and 2 mill

Toe-out on the rear? That's not "ideal" in my experience, especially if you're running completely standard (ie, standard RTAB and no RTAB limiter kits etc). I prefer a bit of toe-in.

Also, I have a CSL KDS printout somewhere at home and I'm pretty sure the factory target for rear camber is about 1d40m, albeit with a wide tolerance either side.

I'll have to dig out the printout...

Got my info from Simpsons. Be interested to know what you were told...

Not been "told" anything, it's my experience...

Not saying what's right or wrong just asking the question really...?

I suppose some small amount of toe-out on the rear makes sense in theory (as they will toe-in under power), but when mine had toe-out it felt very unstable... but maybe there was another cause (too much toe-out for example). I don't have a record of my settings from that time, so maybe this whole conversation is pointless LOL!

Shine a light how did this become a sticky??? Sorry I'm late but I totally disagree with those settings. Ugh..

My car runs -2.5' front , -2.0 rear and a tiny/teeny amount of toe in both front and rear, not a million miles removed from factory settings when it comes to toe I believe. There is a case for toe out on the front of a car but not to my knowledge for the rear. The guys at BMsport have setup my racecar with toeout at the front but it's not recommended for a road car.

I recall way back when my Intraxx was fitted and I had my car setup by the BMW specialist that fitted it to very similar settings to those that Woppum mentions above. When I took the car on track I thought I was going to die. The back had no interest in following the front as you tried to apply power mid/exit of corners and I lost all confidence in my CSL. I spoke with the people who set my car up on more than one occasion and was reassured I just had to get used to it. I was miserable and considered selling my car, in fact it was up on pistonheads for a while and had several viewings.

Anyway, thankfully it didn't sell and before it did the guys at BMsport persuaded me to let them look at the car and when they stuck it on their laser alignment thingy they discovered it had limited camber on the rear and toe out. They suggested this was the likely culprit for my handling woes and adjusted them as per the top of this post. Suffice to say the car was transformed and I began to love my CSL for the first time since I had fitted the Intraxx (4months prior)

My lesson was that there are a ton of alledged specialists out there who just aren't very special and also just how important having your car setup properly is when it comes to appreciating the whole package.

Tom you are digging up a few worms with this thread! Needless to say those setting were advised before my BMS days and before the intrax days. My current settings I believe are identical to yours, however they are not for everyone do to the excessive tyre wear of the inside fronts.

BTW sorry haven't come back to your e-mails. I will probably do the paint job over xmas with all you guys if the cost is OK. My brother crashed his RX8 last week too, so might add that the the bulk buy if it makes sence.

Digging up worms? Who me... ;)

No I just wanted to make sure nobody misread this post and ended up asking for a suicide special setup on their pride and joy. Obviously much of this comes down to personal preference but I still can't get my head around toe out at the rear, didn't work for me at all.
