Where did I post that I wanted anyone's approval? - I didn't and I don't feel I need it. I posted to offer info for any GTI owners who happened to like them enough to want to know more. RedRobin Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Share Posted April 11, 2008 I went up to the TTshop the other day and we had a good poke around with some Audi S6 LED lights in our hands and it's a definite no-no trying to fit them to the GTI. It would mean interfering with the crash bar and that simply isn't an option as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to hunt out the Hella units to adapt the fit to replace the fogs. I'm gonna now investigate the Hella foglight replacement option. I've heard there's going to be a change in the law to allow fogs on as a transition - Not popular among many on TSN!! Q2 what does the change in law mean, Does it mean I can drive around all day with my fogs on..... even when it's sunny....... RedRobin Posted April 14, 2008 Author Report Share Posted April 14, 2008 Martin - Q1 - If you check out the Hella web site I posted a link to earlier (I think it was on TSN and in this thread), and specifically their extensive range of DRL's, you'll see that they already produce 2PT 010 177-801 as a replacement for the fogs on the Mk5 Golf - It doesn't fit the GTI but I'm reasonably confident that it can be easily adapted. Outwardly it doesn't look any different unless from a few inches away but the beam is LED and they are a passive light. The GTI's fogs are totally ineffective anyway for lighting the way for the driver. Q2 - I read somewhere that some European countries are already insisting on the use of DRL's and that the use of fogs is acceptable until it is mandatory in the whole of Europe. This has been planned for a transition period in some countries at least. In terms of efficiency, however, this solution does not match the use of low beam." Also some countries such as Poland and Italy are already making DRL's compulsory. Germany and France are following but I bet that the UK will be the last!! RedRobin Posted June 3, 2008 Author Report Share Posted June 3, 2008 Hella have just sent me these from Germany (with a huge discount! ). I think I'm the first in the UK to have them. Very cool - They replace my front fogs and switch on automatically with the ignition but switch off automatically whenever the side/headlights are switched on. These LED DRL's are legal and no-one can honestly claim they are chavvy imo. RedRobin Posted June 3, 2008 Author Report Share Posted June 3, 2008 Prior to the installation next Monday at my VW dealer's, I popped by there today and they spent an hour exploring the best fit ready for Monday and to see if they needed to make any extra brackets. Dan, is now mostly in a shirt and tie in the Service Dept nowadays but as a mechanic there he has worked many times on my car, so i trust him and get on well with him and he's an enthusiast. How many dealers would give that kind of service? :notworthy:. They also gave me a free copy of the current Volkswagen Driver magazine. The pics show the 'dry run' :- They fit the vents much better than the stock fogs do and also match the Xenons in shiny appearance. Strip DRL's look pretty cool but were not worth sacrificing Xenons for and would have been too difficult to make look oem. I'm looking forward to next week. Btw, the lens has DRL written on the side with Euro certification - Anyone wanting to argue I'm illegally riding with fogs on would have to get on their knees but that doesn't matter to me. I know not everyone agrees with me and finds the whole idea of DRL's either ineffective or chavvy, but I happen to genuinely believe in them as a real-world added safety device, principally as a result of seeing how well they work on Audis on the autobahns and even on German B-roads. I'll post pics next week and they'll get their first showing at the TSN Brighton meet where the Biali Boys are more open to such mods, and then my car is on show at GTI International. The DRL units come with generic top hung brackets. Dan's going to use stainless steel bolts. I've left the units with him and they'll get fitted on Monday morning. The great plus is that the accident repair centre (bodyshop I use) is affiliated to my VW dealer and they look after me there too - So it's no sweat to pop next door and get something made up. They'll do a proper strong fix and I'll be able to report on Monday. We already know that we could simply bolt straight up with a longer bolt than supplied and add washers but Dan wants to see what the best way is :notworthy:. I'm totally happy to sacrifice my fogs but want to keep the option for someone to easily restore the fogs. I'm much more excited by these round DRL's than I expected to be. Btw, after I've posted a fuller story with pics, if anyone wants any of these new LED DRL's I'm currently able to negotiate a significant discount - PM me if anyone interested, and it doesn't have to be a group buy, you'll pay direct but I'll introduce you. I can put you in contact with a fully approved Hella distributor in Germany (highly recommended to me by Hella themselves) who will sell them to you for £127 instead of eBay's £159. But the standard (legal) wiring is such that the DRL's automatically come on with the ignition and automatically go off whenever any of the other lights are switched on. The DRL's will remain on while you flash your headlights though because Dan tells me that's on a separate circuit. I'm sure you could wire it up independently with a separate aftermarket switch. Also, I imagine it's possible to control the DRL's exactly as the fogs are switched on/off. I'm going to go the standard European legal route - On with ignition permanently until other lights are switched on. If I haven't said so already, these round DRL's ARE NOT suitable/functional as fog lights. They are a passive signal light and not a light which illuminates - Hence why they are better than running with dipped headlights in daylight - Far less glare.
