I'm not going to say Ferrari needed some help etc.... I wouldn't say that. coffee.gifgrin.gifblush.gif

No conspiracy theory from me, if they have been dangerous then punish them but things should be clarified a bit maybe for everyone's sake. 169144-ok.gif

I fairly sure "don't block the racing line of another driver on a qualifying lap" doesn't really need much in the way of clarification.

Your right but if they weren't going that slow it wouldn't he half the problem and they could seem them and move out of the way. At such a slow speed they can't move as they would just pull in front of the person on a hot lap. blush.gif

All good banter CarMad - FWIW I think they got unlucky but were on the racing line where as the others were a mile off.

It looked bad on TV, one Mclaren was going across the racing line very slowly, it really fecked up Heidfeld's lap. He could have been 3rd i think. Not sure how you can get out of the way every time though, if you are in the wrong part of the track going alot slower than the other guy its pretty much impossible. They will have to have a certain laptime (%)for an in lap to the pits aswell.

Second race and already were calling a Ferrari/FIA conspiracy? ROLLEY~14.GIF

Definitely not on this occasion. Watching the replay of qualifying it's clear that Hamilton and Kovalainen were crawling along on the racing line, and they're lucky only to have been penalised 5 places.

Good race, though. Brundle and Allen were going on about Ferrari being much faster than McLaren, but whenever Hamilton wasn't stuck behind Webber he was the fastest man on the circuit, and his fastest lap was less than six hundredths behind Raikkonen's fastest lap of the race. Solid drive from Raikkonen, and BMW, Williams and Toyota look better and better.

Looks good for some close racing as the season goes on 169144-ok.gif

Quite a good race in the end, although somn would have been nice just to create a bit of chaos. grin.gif

First of many completely dominant displays from Kimi, I feel.

Driver of the race - Kubica

Moment of the race - lap 1, turn 2 - Hamilton makes an absolutely stunning start as he takes four places in one move! EEK2.GIF

Driver who most needs to re-learn how to drive a car without TC - Massa ... "ambition overtook adhesion" as Brundle put it. tongue.gif

Not the greatest of races action was missing a bit to say the least.

A great performance from Kimi to win the race, Massa messing up again it seems or was it a failure will have to see. Hamilton had a cracking start but that pitstop messed things up and he just wasn't able to pass anyone, not sure I saw anyone else pass either though. smirk.gif

Still to see Ferrari and Mclaren racing head to head, Kimi and Lewis virtually matched each others times on fastest laps so it will be interesting when they do get the chance to race wheel to wheel. I don't think anyone is looking leagues ahead of anyone else just yet but then it is only race two.

BMW strong again but not got the ultimate pace of either Ferrari or Mclaren just yet but they do have the reliability. Renault still not strong, not sure where that 0.6 second advantage is that Alonso brought, I think he has left it at home so far. grin.gif

Still its shaping up to be an interesting season of racing. 169144-ok.gif

LH's pit problem cost him somewhere between 12 and 20 seconds. 2nd or 3rd on the podium? Maybe even contending with Kimi?

Even with the new rules there is still a certain amount of luck running. Hope to see some more exciting 'action' as the series progresses. Still worth getting up for. smile.gif

It wasnt as bad as the usual procession of F1.

Is it me or did ITV put on more ads and for longer? They seemed to annoy me even more than normal. Wonder if they have the couldnt care less attitude now theyve lost it to the Beeb and are concentrating on marketing now???? confused.gif

You might be right get the extra money in whilst they can, it wasn't mentioned today but then why would they.

I was hoping for a more exiting race bit it was a bit dull, fingers crossed things will get better and I'm sure they will 16 races still to go this season and its still close at the top. Maybe BMW / Toyota will make that step to challenge the top two ... ??? smile.gif

I'm not sure how much control over the number of adverts ITV has. As I understood it, Bernie dictates the total number of advert breaks that have to be shown throughout the coverage (for commercial TV channels, at least) as part of the contract. Just like they have to take the official FIA coverage etc. The only thing ITV have control over, is exactly when those breaks happen. Hence the stupidness last season when they had to shove a break in a few minutes before the end of the GP.

Sad to say, I think I'm able to answer this definitively.

Over the last couple of years, I've been steadily archiving my collection of F1 races from VHS to DVD, in the process removing any ads. In the process, I've learned more than anyone should have to learn about ITV's advertising patterns.

The standard pattern for adverts has usually been two breaks before the race, five during, and two afterwards. The pre-race breaks have tended to be 3+ mins, the post-race ones somewhat shorter, often less than 2 mins. In the early seasons of ITV coverage, the in-race breaks would be 2 mins 25 seconds. In the last couple of years, they have lengthened to 2 minutes 55 (so an extra 2.5 minutes of adverts instead of racing over the 5 breaks).

Australia this year returned to the shorter 2'25" breaks, presumably because it's harder to sell advertising space at five in the morning. Malaysia returned to the now-standard 5x 2'55" breaks, but with much shorter pre-race breaks and only one post-race one. In total, then, Malaysia had the same amount of in-race time lost to adverts as last year's races, and about five minutes less advertising than normal at beginning and end of the programme. Again, this is probably due to the early morning time slot. The re-run may have extended these breaks back to normal length, but the number and location of breaks would have been fixed by the commentary from the live broadcast.

Phew. In summary, they didn't put in more breaks, nor did they make them longer. I suspect either the timing particularly jarred for you on this occasion or, more likely, you're paying more attention to them at the moment because of the news that they will be going from next year.
