wsurfa
after my U-Boat experience with blocked scuttle drains I thought I'd got most of the water out. That was until I managed to get a hand under the rear carpet - must be litres left there. I've tried searching but can't find any help as to how to remove the main rear carpet - can any one give me any pointers? 1998 A8 thanks Iain
Figure11
Someone who has done it will be along soon. But it's a bit of a sod. Both front seats and the full centre console have to come out. A dehumidifier might be an option. Mike
wsurfa
thanks mike. Guessed the seats would need to come out - need to get am bloody big torx bit for that. Irritating the centre consule needs to be pulled though. Re the dehumidifier - there is at least a litre or more in the foam so I'd prefer to get the carpets out and dry it all fully thanks Iain
Botang
Your right Iain, with all the sound deadening and sponge holding onto the water the only real way is with full removal of the carpet. I took the decision (partly due to giving up with the centre console removal) to loosen the centre console and then cut through the carpet that fits over the tunnel near the gear selector/handbrake. This made life much easier and I never did find out how the centre console comes out.
dick dasterdley
To remove the centre console, undo the allen head bolts in the side towards th erear of the console, remove the rear vents and und the 2 nuts that bolt the metal frame to the floor remove the screw just in front of the cup holders remove the carpeted side panels and you'll find bolts under there (2 per side), remove these, there are also some bolts at the front of the console that hold the ashtray in place and hold the console to the centre instrument panel (with the radio etc in) To get the console out, this central panel needs to come out...can't be removed without doing this...trust me, I know! Prise out the air vents, undo the bolt behind the vents, unplug all the wiring to switches, etc, then undo the 4 bolts (2 per side) and the panel comes out Then, push the 2 sides of th ecentre console together as far as possible and lift the front up and forwar, so it goes into the space left by the instument panel, feed the console over the handbrake ( don't forget to take the cover off) and it should come out... It's not an easy job and I probably haven't explained it very well, but persevere! It's a bitch of a job, but one that needs doing! It took me 3 days to strip out my soaking interior... EDIT- I'll try and post the procedure from ELSA, but I'm not at home at the mo.... wsurfa
or just cut it :D Is the join noticeable at all? - any chance you could post a pic to show where you cut it? I'd prefer not to have to remove the console if possible as that looks like a royal PITA Thanks Iain
Botang
I loosend the centre console but still couldnt get it out so lifted it up as far as i could and made a cut between the handbrake and gear lever. The edges all tuck back under the trim so it doesnt show at all.

I know what he means - And its about spot on. The problem is that he carpet goes over the handbrake assembly, and so does the center console. Thus you can't get the carpet out whole witout removing the center console, or cutting. If you cut as per Matts advice, then the cut is between the gearlever and handbrake, front to rear underneath the center console. It will be totally invisible once put back together and really wont cause any problems. If you're meticulous about your '8, then you might go for taking the center console apart, which is quite an education. We can change a carpet in about 4 hours, but its not a skill that really woos the ladies... - 3 days seems more realistic for a first time, thats 1 day to get it out, 1 day to put together, and 1 extra day to work out where the extra screws came from... jimbohumby
hi all just a quick one I see in the pics on how to remove an a8 centre consul is this the same as a d2 a8? as it looks a little different also is the bulkhead drain holes in the same place. iam having a bad time with my a8 gallons of water just cannot find the drain holes. it's driving me totally nuts can any one help.
MichaelV8V
If the D2 is like the D3, then you can use a big Allen key in the torx bolts. It fits perfectly and is much cheaper. Who would have thought that allen keys fit torx bolts
