Chav
Hi chaps, quick heads up - if anyone is upgrading their PCs the single biggest recommendation I can give is for mtron ssd drives. their prices shot down last week interestingly enough as they've upped production. Forget everything else, they are the biggest single speed boost you can give your PC. and if any review sites, magazines, etc disagree, they're wrong. eg. my main dev machine will now compile projects with hundreds of files in literally a few seconds instead of minutes. very stable but if you're interested bootup time is around 3-4 seconds if setup correctly (excluding bios) and you can format a 128gb drive in 30 seconds. read 100mb/sec+ guaranteed per drive. access time < 0.1 seconds even with multi- raid0. results from 10000+ file search in a fraction of a second instead of 30 seconds+ etc.etc. even when moving from u320 15krpm drives, the difference is astounding. I use these guys in the url below. cheapest prices. excellent service. Diamond Point Online Store
Chelsea Mick
Am i the only one that doesn't get this Solid State Drive thing? I mean over £800 for a 128 GB drive? What is the point of these drives? Apart obviously form the access speed. Can anyone justify this cost per MB for home use?
Mac
Probably not for consumer use no, but I've installed an 80Gb unit on my documentation PC and it's made the world of difference in terms of performance. Some of my tech docs are pretty big (100Mb +) with loads of embedded diagrams/excel etc. and it can run like sludge... It now flies
Chav
what brand of ssd is that mac? mick - if you replace your system partition with a fast 16gb ssd, for ~£150 you'll get a huge speed boost. even browsing the web when its caching files. they are also totally silent and dont tend to lose data. copy your main big apps across, such as photoshop etc and they'll load many times faster also. for games you'll need a huge CPU to make levels load much faster. so really ssds not much use there. not much use for storing images/videos/games in general unless you're a total power nut. for databases though, they are fantastic. Mac
No idea - new PC 'they' delivered to me had an 80Gb working SSD in it. I'll have a look when I get home It's now nearly as fast as my iMac on the same doc
Chelsea Mick
Thanks Mac & Chav Thought I was missing out on a bit of technology there. Obviously I couldn't justify the cost of one of these drives as I don't really use my PC for number crunching databases. Just a bit of surfing, mails, the occasional spreadsheets as well as videos, pictures and music files. I like the idea of having the operating system and main apps on a drive that is that quick but the cost is quite off putting. Will keep an eye on the prices
