I've just got back from a test drive of the new MkVI GTI and think it's absolutely awesome. I've had a MkV for about three and a half years and there's a HUGE improvement all round. The engine is super smooth and feels more like a 6 cylinder rather than a 4, and the exhaust note is far nicer than the previous model. The car I test drove was a DSG so it's hard to make a like for like comparison being used to a manual, but the sound of the 'blips' on the down changes sound fantstic!

The ride is firmer than the MkV but doesn't seem as harsh over bumps. The car also corners much flatter than previously and doesn't suffer anywhere near as much roll. The spec of the car I drove included 18" wheels but didn't have the adaptive damping, but even without this option it's still much nicer to drive than the old model.

Overall refinement is also much improved and the car is very, very quiet. My current car is lined with Dynamat throughout but is still far noisier than the MkVI. There's hardly any wind noise and the car I drove was completely rattle free which makes a nice change!

I like the sound of that Jimbogolf - smooth, quiet, refined and rattle-free is all good. My dealer sent me a brochure on Friday, clearly trying to tempt me! I have to say I like it a lot. Only two things I don't like: no side bump strips (which I could live with), rear tints (which I couldn't). Sorry to go on about it but does anyone know whether these bast@rd tints can be deleted? IMO they look catastrophically SHITE.

I think I would probably add some of the Mk5 rubbing strips as I'm sure they would fit. The car I test drove had rear tints but I didn't realise they were standard. I definately wouldn't be happy having to have them as I agree that they look awful! It's a real shame you can't have all round tints in this country as just having the rears on their own looks odd.

The tints cannot be deleted. My dad has just placed an order for a 1.4T SE Golf. He was going to go for a GT model but these also come as standard with gangsta glass. He tried to get a factory order without it (as he was ordering extras anyway and it would have been a factory order). He opted for a cheaper model with less power as he wasn't prepared to put up with them.

When you look at the number of older folks who drive golfs and most probably wouldn't like these, VW are going to lose orders. It's a small issue but very 'marmite'!

Tints are not for me in any way, shape or form. I just don't get it - VW have brought out a cracking car and they go and alienate all the buyers who don't like tints by fitting them as standard. FFS, they're a £185 cost option on S/SE models. If you want them, spec them. Has someone in VW dropped a b0llock and ordered too much window tint film or something?

I love the tints and would definately specify them again. Great look, IMO and can't imagine I'd like my car without them.

It's not window film, Timski, it's a coloured glass that's fitted in the factory +++

It may be worth finding out if it is a standard on GTi cars in EU/Germany.... this could be a VW UK c@ck up! I find it very hard to imagine VW AG would make such a option standard and not have it a no cost delete option.

Apart from that it looks and sounds like another cracking GTi.

Don't tell Red Robin - he'll not be happy...

....You're so right!! I've been out driving the new supercharged S4 Avant V6 since Saturday (just back now for an hour and then off again). She's got Comfort | Auto | Dynamic settings and Comfort is far too sloppy so I'm mostly in Dynamic setup and consequently doing 19 mpg instead of the claimed 30 mpg!

It was the same with the new Scirrocco - 'Comfort' is not for driving enjoyment and gives insufficient feedback. But, there are many people out there who prefer that caccooned marshmallow feel - I'm just not one of them.

I reckon you'd need to attach the drivetrain to the seat of the car with just some rubber mounts and that would keep Robin happy.
:grin::roflmao:

I hope they sort the roads out soon otherwise i`ll be needing new springs, shocks and top mounts...... do you know what those parts are RedRobin... suspension? :D

Robin, with all these mods you've done, like suspension, engine mounts etc, do you ever properly use the car in anger, like on track, or do you just want it to be like it is for regular road use?

....Never ever in 'anger', but perhaps you just mean that figuratively. I have plenty of time and opportunity to drive a car within its limits on the road. I think I prefer the ever changing dynamics of the road and that there are plenty of features as opposed to an airfield circuit with repetitive laps. Also, it's less stressful on the car because the 'stresses' aren't so constantly sustained.

I suppose it's more dangerous on the road but that never bothers me. This happened this afternoon while out with a friend on a spirited drive. No-one hurt - The driver is sat in my car being interviewed : -

Looks silver on my screen Robin :)

Have to say, it does nothing for me in that colour - looks like it still needs painting. Red, white or grey for me still.

Re your spirited drive - how the hell did that car end up on it's roof on a wide road like that! I hope you advised the driver of the appropriate mods they should make to ensure their car remains 'flat' on the road in future.

^^^^

Re the accident - Middle-aged female driver said she fell asleep and hit the bank. Time of day mid afternoon. I got there shortly after it happened - Her car was travelling in opposite direction to me. A couple of other cars stopped very briefly but didn't stay.

Back on topic, I'm seeing an increasing number of non-GTI Mk6 Golfs on the road. As launch time gets closer, the excitement is building. Regardless of what our expectations are I'm sure there'll be things to love about it.

Looking at that pic, I suspect the fact the tyres are all different didn't help things.

RR, I'm surprised you don't take your car on track with all the mods you've done to it, seems like a bit of a waste to me, there's no way you can ever fully exploit any car on the roads, let alone one thats been modded as well as yours?

^ What colour is that? It looks 'champagne'.

Reflex Silver its the dealers lighting effects.

The only reason i posted the silver was because i have posted red, white & carbon gray earlier in the thread.

If or when i find the MK6 GTI in shadow blue, graphite blue or steel gray i will also post them or if anyone else find some please post them here or link to them. Thanks..
