Perhaps it's just me, getting late and i'm tired (my excuse anyway:p) but the MKVI GTI kind of reminds me of a modern day MG Maestro from certain angles...

I hope its just you...lol....

VW did say they looked at the mk1 Golf so maybe more like.

RR, I'm surprised you don't take your car on track with all the mods you've done to it, seems like a bit of a waste to me, there's no way you can ever fully exploit any car on the roads, let alone one thats been modded as well as yours?

....I don't agree about my car's mods being "a bit of a waste" - They may be a waste for you and many others, but not for me - The car doesn't have a brain that's capable of differentiating whether it's being driven on a road or on a track and so all it's suspension and brakes etc etc are still given a healthy and enjoyable workout. I prefer not to drive any vehicle at its limit in any circumstance - I keep the car's limits beyond my own driver limitations. Judging from my many passenger rides on track I think I would get bored by the repetition of laps in an often featureless landscape. I love the ever changing dynamics of a road journey.

I've been driving a new supercharged S4 Avant this week and have been having a huge amount of fun on the roads without driving dangerously, and that's obviously a car with much more power than my GTI and also with quattro+sports diff.

By not having black VW badges, I think that VW are missing an opportunity to further promote their claims that the Mk5 and 6 pay much homage to the early Mk GTI's.

However, most of us GTI boyz (a huge minority of enthusiasts) have now got either painted or carbonfibre black badges. Even black vinyl covered ones.

I didn't realise this either. I thought all the early GTI's had black badges hence why some change their MKV badges to black.

....Well, whether it was only on 1800's or not, it has evolved into a tradition and has been done for many years now by the modding minority.

Yes it was. I didn't realise the black badges were just on 1800s.

It wasnt, it was only on GTIs. Not only the mk1 1800 GTI Series2, they were also on the Mk1 1.6 GTI Series 1 & also the mk1 1.6GTI S2 cars too as well as the mkII GTIs.

That ones silver for the reason getting hold of a genuine new silver one is hard enough, getting hold of a black one is very hard due to the amount of time since VW produced any.

:secret:

I went through about half a dozen badges thanks to the Beastie Boys :ffs:

Razor blades glued to the rear of the badge seemed to save mine more than once back then.

What VW did with the Mk5 was make the GTI back into a hot hatch, after the lard-arses that were the Mk3 and Mk4 (yes, I had some of both), but the only similarities between the Mk5 & 6 and the Mk1 are the brand and the badge. Yet more VW marketing spin...

True, but it worked and worked well. I think almost all journalism I read when the MKV GTI launched commented on how certain features harked back to the mk1 (seat fabric, gear shift, red grill piping etc). For many who grew up with the MK1 and respected it for the car it was at that time, this added a certain desirability to the MKV. Perhaps VW knew that they needed to win hearts and minds; a good hot hatch will win minds but many moved away from GTI's for other arguably better cars with the stodgy MK3 & 4 offering little for the driver.

^ Exactly what i did. We went over to the SEAT range rather than go for the mk3 or mk4. As i found they had a better ride/handling/size balance and the quality/price ratio was right for us.

The mk1 and mk5 are totally different types of car imo. The mk5 is so big (externally) for a start it would have been classed as a cavalier/family size car back in the mk1/mk2 days. Its refinment too is from the next class up. The weight also hampers its feel imo compared to the mk1's.

Im not normally one for this type of mod but i really like this one for some reason especially Firespark Metallic.

....

I've seen quite a few photos of a Scirocco in Firespark metallic and it's a great colour, but it's much brighter than those posted illustrations show.

It's sounding as if the new Mk6 GTI is much closer to the standard of finish of the Audi S3, and that is what VW are aiming for.

As the Mk6 is so closely based on the Mk5, it's bound to be an excellent version but most people perhaps expect a bigger step in the evolution.
