No one has picked up on my earlier point.

Mk5 Tdi 138bhp 0-60 = 9.2 sec

Mk6 Tdi 138bhp 0-60 = 11.2 sec

So if the mkV Gti 197bhp does a 7.2 dash to 60/62mph there is no way the Mk6 Gti is going to do 6.5 seconds. The Pireli with 227bhp only does 6.8.

My point being if the like for like Tdi is nearly 2 seconds slower what chance has the Gti got of being quicker. Maybe a 265bhp version could do 6.5 but anything less than 230bhp will struggle to get under 7 seconds.

I know 0-60 times are not the most important thing, but all the rivals (apart from ctr) improve in this area when the new model comes out. Just cant help feeling VW are going to do a Mk3/Mk4 on us and end up with something comfortable and well made, but just not quick enough.

Don't forget, the gearing might be completely different. It might make the in-gear times (which is more relevant) shorter.......?

Audi quote 7.1 0-60 for an A4 Avant with the same engine.

6.5 if it's Quattro (and I expect the traditional 4WD start of wind it up to 5K and then dump the clutch)

Both are much heavier than a Golf so I would say it's in with a shout at it.

Just want to see what it looks like as so far I'm really "meh" about MKVI's looks (especially the rear lights).

Which is a shame, as I think all variants of the MkV look good.

....

I've just seen both Autocar and AutoExpress in WHSmiths Public Library - Not enough info to warrant buying the mags. 3-door white pictured.

It's very much as the latest rumoured pics - Scirocco style front and interior dashboard. Good to see the tartan cloth back! Nasty cheap looking steering wheel with too much fussy silver bits (too Audi). BBS White Worm Edition 18's but with black inserts rather than grey. Rear looks very Mk4-ish.

Ed30 engine, Scirocco suspension setup, VW electronic LSD (think I prefer the reliability of my Quaife). I think I read it's also got ADC - Adaptive Distance Control - Yuk!! No increase in 0-62 or top speed unless you count 2 mph.

I'm sure it will look better in the flesh and in other colours than white - The Mk5 looks better in white than the Mk6 imo.

:roflmao: Sometimes an educated guess is enough.

I agree with comments about in gear performace is important and it may be quicker (or not) in the mk6 but........................ if a new model BMW M3 or Audi RS4 did not improve performance figures then there would be uproar. Just my humble opinion but not good enough VW. You did a good job improving mk5 Gti over the mk4 but then got lazy with the R32 and did not move the game on. Think you may have made that mistake again. They must be leaving room for that higher performance golf, and my bet would be a light weight version.

Just an educated guess of course.

I like the cabin, has a race feel.

.... - Perhaps I should post some pics of the interiors of various VW Racing's cars! I know we've only got magazine pics so far but it doesn't look "race feel" at all to me - In fact quite the contrary because it has more embellishment (which would all be removed in a race car).

Am I the only one that actually likes it? I'll hold out for the "R" version if it's true though.

No you're not, I like it very much too. I'm not sure that some people are being very subjective.

The shape and styling is a natural evolution from the Mk5, but they've done away with the shield/V shape front that seemed to be standard on cars for years now, so it's a welcome change, as different brands were beginning to look alike. The rear of the car looks more interesting than the old model - the Mk5 rear looked very boring IMO and let down the overall look. I think the separated exhaust pipes help in this respect. The GTI Mk6 is a significantly more exciting looking car than the standard models, like the the Mk5 was.

From the printed pics I saw in Autocar, I have to say the black inserts on the Monza IIs give them a much sharper look, because of the higher contrast.

According to Autocar, the engine is 207hp / 206lb/ft, which would give it pretty much the same torque and only slightly more power. Slightly dissapointing to some, but I don't think there is any real need to make it faster than the old model. All out power is not what the GTI is about. Of course it remains to be seen whether these figures are accurate, as they contradict claims that VW would use the engine from the A4/A5.

Autoexpress also state that the engine is essentially the same as in the current GTi. Which is disappointing as I expected it to get the new Audi engine with valvelift and much lower emissions

Like the back end with the twin pipes, but the front end is all wrong for me; far too 'rocco-like.

.... x2 - That's what I feel too.

But I also agree with Metalex about the evolution being continued - A trademark of the Golf.

I don't know how reliable these magazines are - I thought that the new engine had the valvelift technology.

Also, my sources are very sceptical about the certainty of a 'GTI-R' AWD version. Even if it's logical, there's a lot of speculation.

More than anything before making judgement, I wanna see it n drive it!!

I don't think the engine features vavelift. Autoexpress say that the increase in bhp is due to tweaks to the induction system. The CO2 emissions are 178g/km, which are quite a bit higher than the 2.0T engine in the new A4 (154g/km). Torque is significantly less too - 206lb/ft vs 260lb/ft
