I know there is a tendancy by many existing GTI owners across this and other forums to want perceive the new Golf to be a MK5.5.

To be fair, it looks similar to the MKV and could be argued that is is a visual facelift. However, with completely new dash, suspension arrangement, equipment levels and all panels re designed it genuinly is a MK6 in my opinion. I'm not sure whether some just don't like accepting that they have the 'old model' now or they haven't fully considered the changes the new model has.

BTW - Not aimed at you RR as I know you're probably the least likely person to be concerned about having a MKV with the MKVI now here but your post got me thinking +++

I'm partly guilty as there is always that 'feel good' feeling when you have the latest model but I remain still very satisfied with my MKV after 3 years (more than any other car I have ever owned after 3 years).

Mine's almost run in now! :o:roflmao:

I am going to arrange a test drive in the MK6 just out of curiosity.

I agree with you, Phil, and can see that the latest GTI Mk6 is indeed a different car. I have sometimes referred to it as a Mk5.5 only because it is such an organically evolved version of the Mk5 and 5.5 seems a good description to illustrate its Mk5 basis.

I too, have absolutely no intention of buying a Mk6 GTI but I still very much look forward to a test drive. I'm hoping I won't like the R20T when that comes out!!

I' now on my 3rd day with a poverty spec. MkVI and I have to really say, apart from the lack of power, I am really impressed by it.

It's very quiet, refined and the suspension is excellent. The steering is brilliant. I have driven a poverty spec. MKV and believe me this car is in a different league and not one single squeak or rattle from the cabin. I wish I could say the same with my R32.

IMO the interior quality is far superior to the MKV.

I guess I should haev taken some pictures .... White MK6 GTi.

Its not bad, exhausts look a bit stuck on, but I like the styling better than the mk5 (well except Robins), cabin for me is certainly an inmprovement over the mk5.

As for the drive - well I'm not allowed to say or they'll tell me off......

....Which perfectly illustrates how each of us desires different things from our GTI's. Personally I don't like "very quiet and refined" - To me that adds up to feeling more detached while driving. The degree of cabin soundproofing on the Mk5 irritated me (hence the Milltek) and I've read all about what VW have consciously done to increase the soundproofing on the Mk6.

If I could hear a V6 (Milltek'd of course), I'd not be at all bothered by squeaks and rattles.

It sounds like VW are succeeding in achieving parity with the Audi standards - I'm sure it's what most people want but just not me.

I do love to hear the V6 but on my daily commute of 70 miles rattles and squeaks can get on your nerves.

Although it is only povey spec. the dynamics of the car are very good, the steering is the best I have ever felt on a VAG car.

You'll be able to make up your own opinon Robin when you get the test drive in the GTI

I agree with you. They really have not looked into it fully imo and jumped to the conclutions as alot of people do of if it looks the same it is the same. If they want to play that silly game to make themselfs feel better they may as well rename there beloved mk5 while there on because of the Golf mk/series history it would no longer be a mk5. :roflmao:

I reckon you should buy a Focus RS Robin - hear it, bounce around in it and go like stink +++

....I reckon you're right and I'd really enjoy the drive. I don't much like the RS styling though and what's great about a 5-door GTI is that it's such a good allrounder.

How soon are your Mk6 GTI test drives, Mook? - I'm looking forward to your impressions.

MKV GTI :P

Might be worth speaking to your dealer. Perhaps they've got something a few years old that they don't want to stick on the forecourt but not gone to a trader yet. You might get something around trade price you can take off their hands?

Well, I still haven't herard from my local stealer with regards to my test drive; I'm not going to chase the barstewards, but I'm curious to make the comparisons between the 2 marques.

still another two weeks before VW in Hull get theres ?

i ordered mine before seeing it in and driving it in the flesh, but got very good write ups etc, maybe a stopgap for the R20 if i dont like it ? shouldnt lose too much money on it, if i decide to sell it on? going back to when the mk5 came out prices stayed high for a while due to waiting times and demand, we will have to wait and see :-)

I enjoyed the r32 but still missed my mk5 gti, gti felt a lot lighter and more nimble, both great cars thou

That's the son of a b1tch that I'm waiting for. So hope it's everything I imagine it to be and more. Never mind about the same power plant in the TTS, the engine from the TTRS should be used in this highly anticipated car +++
