RedRobin
I cancelled my test drive in the ACC and DSG-equipped 5dr GTI on Monday. In reality, the only MKVI I plan to buy is the R20. I'd be keen to hear wht you make of it though, RR. ....My VW dealer knows that I have no intention of buying one but is still willing to let me borrow their cars. Trouble is though that according to their insurance policy, once I'm over 70 I'll have to be accompanied! I'm not too far off completing quite a long review for posting - I might manage to finish later today. Mook is usually very reliable with his info and he has posted that the 'R20T' is expected in the UK in 2011, which is certainly very logical given VW's usual courses of action. Mook
It won't be called "R20T" - it'll just be the Golf R - or Golf .:R to keep all those VW brand guardians on TsN happy

RedRobin
It won't be called "R20T" - it'll just be the Golf R - or Golf .:R to keep all those VW brand guardians on TsN happy ....That's useful to know (providing your sources are reliable) because the whole GTI community has been referring to it as the "R20T" which is why I wrote it 'R20T' so all would understand which car we were referring to. By all accounts and rumours etc, it's extremely likely to be a cross between the previous .:R's and the GTI.
Mook
The Scirocco R is first in line for the new treatment - it's got the same engine as the current S3 (which was already de-tuned to 230PS to go in the Ed30). FWD only and that's what the Golf will be - with manual 6 speed or DSG. It'll be launched at Frankfurt next year, unless there is too much commercial pressure (and sales volumes are too low) which may bring it forward. RedRobin
. ....Yes, I've heard the same about the 'Golf R'/'R20T' - FWD only and turbo'd. Regarding whether the Ed30's engine is a de-tuned S3 or not, it's a very hotly contested and long-winded debate indeed and one which includes people quoting part #'s. It's a subject best avoided! It's a bit academic too - The bottom line is that the K04'd Ed30 goes like sh!t off a shovel!! (within it's type of car). I only hope I can keep up with the dudes in their 340bhp+ tuned Ed30's on our way to The 'Ring next week! A couple of them were at Millbrook with you TSN lot recently. JonC
If I have to wait until 2011 for the R-series Golf, then I may as well carry on tuning my GTI. On the list are V2's, possibly ARB's, turbo back Milltek and stage 2 software. That will keep me going. Either that or trade in for an Ed30 and do the same mods as I have and planned. Are you sure the R-series Golf will be 2WD and launching in 2011? I thought it's AWD all the way and sooner?
Tarmac_Terrorist
I read in Evo that the Rocco was to have FWD but the Golf R would be 4wd and kust a few extra neddies to help. I assume Mook got info from 'those in the know' at the track day so i'm inclined to run with that for now.

Snoopy
Are there likely to be any discounts on this compared to 0 on the MK5? Oh how times change... I got a free tank of fuel when I bought my MkV, nothing else Threre was discounts on the mk5. At laurnch there was 11% i know as my mate got one. I then got one mid 2005 for over 10% discount but then it was much harder to find them at those sort of discounts. The demand grew and then of cuase lack of decent discounts. No idea about the Mk6 - it doesn't exist But "The New Golf GTI" is quicker than the stock Mk5 - 210 bhp and a smoother changing DSG 'box have seen to that Neither does the mk5 GTI in this case as VW also called it "The New Golf GTI" not the mk5 back when it first came out. It even said so on the first brouchers sent out as well as the coverplates on the press photo cars. ....That's useful to know (providing your sources are reliable) because the whole GTI community has been referring to it as the "R20T" which is why I wrote it 'R20T' so all would understand which car we were referring to. But who says the masses are ever right. I never actually called it the R20T

Tipex
regarding whether the ed30's engine is a de-tuned s3 or not, it's a very hotly contested and long-winded debate indeed and one which includes people who are anally retentive, and need to get out and find a girlfriend, and have a life. efa
RedRobin
But who says the masses are ever right. I never actually called it the R20T ....I appreciate that not literally everyone calls it the R20T but I'm sure you'll agree that the term, correct or not in its description, is very widely used and understood by many. Mook
Mook, can you confirm? Don't make me laugh - do you think marketing people at a launch event would know stuff like that? I have very good sources in Germany

Tarmac_Terrorist
Evo Mag fell through my door this morning. An interesting comparison between the MK6 GTI & Scirocco TSI. Part of their summary of "The New Golf GTI" made me put down my coffee for a moment: "The GTI though deceptively rapid, it too quiet, too linear, too grown up. For those reasons it just misses the mark of what made the MK5 so special; it's not quite so tuned in to what we need or want from a hot hatch". Didn't know Robin worked for Denis Publishing Just being pedantic for a moment; has anyone noticed the manual gear shift on the mk6 GTI? - definitely a Halfords after thought! For those reasons it just misses the mark of what made the MK5 so special; it's not quite so tuned in to what we need or want from a hot hatch" I think that sums it up quite accurately, although I have weeks when I can admire the design and weeks when I don't, overall it doesn't come close to the MKV. Funny how history repeats itself i remember reading similar in 1984.
Snoopy
I thought he was going to crash a few times eek. I still wish they did a lighter blue on the mk6 GTI. Like 'Rising blue metallic' on the scirocco or the older 'Laser blue' of the early mk5. That would prob make my mind up if they did. Tipex
Cant say I'm impressed by what I've seen in that clip. Sounds like a Diesel? what RPM is it changing up at? And the DSG is making a right hash of things, aside from the pretty ham-fisted driving, it's changing at all the wrong times, and seems to be getting itself rather confused. Having driven a few DSG's on the road, I really liked them, but it seems they are a bit gash for fast track work.
Snoopy
Couple of shadow blue pics. Not great quality but thankyou so much to a 'cccc32' of another GTI forum for taking the time to get and host them for me. JonC
Can't say I'm a fan of the shadow Blue; more of a DBP fan myself, but that wouldn't happen on the MKVI. The GTI needs 18's. Simple. 19's should be optional.
