Hi

Some serious help needed. My passat fills up with water behind the passenger seat. I can see a small line where the water comes in, it goes right up behind the dash. i have had alook under the bonnet and under the windscreen as far as i can bit cant trace where this water comes it. i thought it was the sun roof but have tested this with the hose and it is water tight. Any ideas?? im totally miffed by it and dont reall want to start going to garages just yet as these things can cost a fortune!

Also my boot switch down in the drivers door next to the fuel cap switch hasstopped working, the soft switch in the boot lid alsodoes not work now. Is thisbecause of the water getting in or could it be something simple like a fuse? We have not had the weather here to be able to check it out.

Last thing, you must think my car is a total dog lol, is i had a coil pack fail a few months ago. the pack was replaced with a pattern part and has not been the same since, the yellow engine light is on and when i gun the car it coughs and missfires, it has been into a garage to have the light switched off but after an hour it comes back on. What can i do?

All help appreciated!!

Hi

cheers for the fast reply, will i have to take the battery right out? am not sure about disconnecting the battery because of radio codes as i dont have the code for the car in any of the paperwork. What is the CCU all about?? And what am ilooking for with the bulkhead drains?

I think there is a recall for blocked bulkhead drains on a Passat.

There are 2 drains, 1 under the batt and 1 under the brake servo.

These are known to block and fill the bulkhead with water, your brake servo half submerged in water !.

The water gets in the cabin on the pax. side and soaks the Central

Convenience unit causing lots of elec. problems.

I'm just off out, will check this thread in the morning, Good Luck .

As kite has already mentioned they located in the bulkhead where the battery sits. Over time leaves and general debris blocks the drain holes up.

The only way to really gain access is to remove the battery and the battery tray to expose the hole.

As already mention better to do it sooner rather than later as the water runs into the convenience unit.

For the time being try and remove as much water as possible out of the bulkhead. Good luck!

hi

found the drain plugs

the space under the battery was full of water n god knows what else!, pulled out the battery and the tray, easier than i thought, and put my finger through the drain plug, it emptied out over a gallon of water! ive cleaned it now and put it back together, just worried about the ccu?? what problems am i going to get, the electronic boot switch and switch in the drivers door have stopped workin so i can only open the boot with a key.

is this the start of a whole lot more probs? can the ccu be changed for a second hand one from the scrappy?(main stealer can bugger off!!)

all those that replied its much appreciated!!!

Chris,

The water does run back depending on what level the car is on.

Not sure on the CCU, it all depends on if it has any immobiliser functions embedded in it.

If not then I dont see why you cant get a used one and then recode. I would do some more digging on the switches first though, may be another cause.

Hope it dries out well, lucky to have a dehumidifier especially with this lovely August weather!

Hi

If anybody has been following my problems on here, big thanks to those that have helped me!!!, i've been looking online and found a couple of web sites. One explains how to clear the drains with pictures, very helpful (looks like i only cleaned one drain) step by step.

Web site... :: .:: WeirdLittleBiscuit dot Com ::. .:: Fixing Passat Leak ::. ::

The second site explains the damage it does to this CCU or CCM as they call it. You have to take apart the N/S of the car, carpets up the lot to get to this little box of tricks, it goes on about how to dry out the circuit board and other things. But the worst part i have found reading it is that you might have to cut and solder or join wires because of the way vw has spliced this gizmo into the wiring loom of the car.

Finger crossed the weather will be good here in sunny devon this weekend for me to have a go at this. If i suceed i will put my results on here if not keep an eye on the news for a passat being thrown off the tamar bridge!!

I had lots of water in the near side foot well in my YR 2000 Passat, this caused the alarm to keep going off in the middle of the night. I was not popular with the neighbours! The leak was caused by the pollen filter not being sealed properly. The water had not got into the control box but the wiring connection was water damaged. I had to have this repaired and then dried the carpet out myself.

It would be worth anyone with a Passat of this age lifting the carpet in the front passenger footwell and making sure that the area is dry. You could save yourself some trouble if this is caught early on before the control box gets water damaged.

If a VW dealer get hold of a car in this state it could cost £100's.to put right. New control box, wiring, removing seats and trim, drying carpets or worse still new carpets! and with labour at £90 per hour it dosen't bear thinking about! :(

Hello,

I have the same problem with boot in my '02 passat. I was googling for a solution and found this forum. The boot in my passat is only opening on key - not by remote or internal button. I had recently a recall SB51 B8 check carried out in VW garage. Which means they have cleaned the drains under the battery and done something so hopefully water won't get into the car anymore. Carpets in the rear were soaked. I lifted the carpet under the front passenger seat and pulled out the CCU box. Its looks ok but the cables were a little damp. I dried the carpets and cables. Rear electric n/s window wasn't working but after drying it works fine. However I still cannot open the boot.

Passatchris, have you solved your problem? If yes can you please post the solution or anyone else? Thanks

hi i had the same problem with my 02 passat the pollen filter housing seal needs replacing as this is where the water is getting in also water will have soaked the ccu unit in front of the passenger seat if you are lucky it may dry out also check the wiring loom out that goes to it i think with the probs you are having you may have to have a new unit and thats a VW job hope this helps

Hi,

Just joined the forum and seen you problem. I had the same problem but it was blocked drain vents in the scuttle under the front screen. One is under the battery and on the other side. You can't see them but can feel them with your fingers. They are a pain to reach but with a bit of flexible wire they can be cleaned. Water drains out and problem disappears.

Hope this helps

Hi Pete,

You need to remove the plastic upright inside the car that is level with the back of the front wing. To do this there is a small screw cover at the bottom of this upright, not sure if this is a cross head or Torq type screw. Having removed this panel you should be able to ease up the trim holding the carpet down.

Hope this helps

Hi all,

To raise the carpet you need to remove the passenger side seat (Flick 2x small caps off of runner covers in rear footwell and remove screws, then remove 2x 13mm nuts from under the front of the seat in the centre when the seat is slid back. Then slide the seat towards the rear out of the runners)

Once you have removed the seat you can remove the sill trims. The sill trim just pulls upwards at the front (held in by clips) and a plastic screw just under the rear bench seat. The one at the front (between the sill and the dash) has a plastic cap over a screw but it's hard to see because it sits flush. Remove the screw then remove the trim.

With the trims now removed the carpet can be raised and the convience ecu found in the large plastic box.

Check the ecu for water damage and also check all multiplugs to the left of the footwell (under dash) for corrosion too.

You now need to fix the leak!

Remove the wipers arms, lower screen trim and plenium chamber cover.

Now remove the battery (13mm bolt holding clamp) and battery tray.

You can now remove rubber grommets from drains (one under batt tray and one under brake servo), This will allow water to drain.

You should also remove the pollen filter and pollen filter housing (three 10mm nuts and then raise and remove it). You will find the foam seal will be falling apart) Replace this with correct sealing cord (avalible from VW but if they struggle pm me and i will try and find the part number for you).

Rebuild once you have checked and if neccesary repaired/replaced ecu and wiring.

Hope this helps

Dear all who read. My second post now (other one on the other thread about water ingress in Passats).

In between my 2001 and 53 plate Passat leakers, I thought "Try Audi - it won't be the same with an Audi". So I got an Audi A6 - could only afford a S reg. No water in it!!!!

Until I parked it on the drive having just, stupidly, paid cash for it that very day. It spent the next 6 weeks in and out of Audi at Ivybridge being dried etc. and eventually went to auction with a myriad of faults and realised a fraction of the purchase cost.

But my point (without driving it home - it might be full of water) here is two-fold. It was the same cause - blocked drain-holes => leaking pollen filter housing. And secondly, the same staff from VW Plymouth that sold me the leaking 2001 Passat were now working at Audi Ivybrdge! Luckily I saw the funny side.
