Sponge
Has anyone ever rented a lens for their (D)SLR? I have a wedding come up in a few weeks and I'm tempted to rent a lens for the weekend, to go with my new Canon 40D. I'd really like to try out an expensive lens, see what it's like. All I have at the moment is a Canon 50mm f1.8 and a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro/HSM. I'm not that happy with the latter. In fact, the only reason I've still got it is it has a very small scratch on the lens, so I'd never be able to flog it. It's only for my own use, I haven't been tasked with taking photos of the day. bazza_g
I never knew you could hire lenses, am having a flick through the website now!
CarMad
It depends what you want, the 24-70 f2.8 is pretty good but not really a lens for FF, the 17-55 f2.8 is virtually an L for the glass used in it and a better lens for a crop. If you are in a crowded place the 17 will be of real benefit you can't back up when a wall is in the way. The 28-300 is a push pull and very heavy, not sure that would be a good choice IMO and the aperture isn't that clever either. I used the 30mm f1.4 to get some cracking shots in dodgy light, the 85mm f1.8 is amongst the best IQ for the money and could be used as well to get some great shots of people from a bit of a distance. biturbo
It depends what you want, the 24-70 f2.8 is pretty good but not really a lens for FF I think it's probably one of the best lenses on the market. My perfect lens bag for a wedding will consist of: 24-70 2.8 - covers a fairly wide range for group and portraits. 16-35 2.8 - on hand in case needed for the wide group shots. 70-200 2.8 - close ups from distance for natural poses. (speeches etc) 50 1.2 - for portraits. Unfortunately I only have one of those four. Don't forget the need for an external flash!

Sponge
Thanks for the input guys. I'm still weighing up the costs. I already have a speedlite 580. Edit: Just noticed Calumet have a place in Liverpool. Edited September 17, 2008 by Sponge

Its a great lens but not all purpose for a crop thus why I suggested something else. FF then thats a different matter.
