iphone stoopid question time

It's fairly straightforward:

Find a track in your itunes library you wish to use as a ring tone (not one purchased through itunes store though). Right click on it and select the 'get info' menu item. Find the options tab. You will see a window with a slider in it that changes the length of the track. Change it so that it is no longer than 30 seconds (iphone's max ringtone file size is the limiting factor here). Ok, and close that window. Right click on the track again, and select, 'Open in windows explorer'. Change the extension from .m4p to .m4r - then tell the phone about the new ringtone - and hey presto! imported!

Remember to go back and reset the slider to the full track length after you've done it.

If that's really confusing, just search on youtube for a video tutorial. There's loads.

I've just tried this and have found the following problems: (Using iTunes v8.0.1.11 for Windowz)

> The only slider in the OPTIONS SCREEN is the volume adjust, no track length option

> There isn't anoption for OPEN IN WINDOWS EXPLORER, when you right click

How do you tell the phone about the ringtone in iTunes ???

Apologies - it seems to have changed, and I forgot a couple of steps. Beneath the volume slider are two boxes with start and finish of track in. If you want the first bit of the track, set it to 0 and 0.29. Right click on the file and select Create AAC. Open it in explorer and change the file extension from m4a to m4r. Then go to file, add the .m4r file to library. Then connect your phone and select the ringtones tab - the new ringtone should be added!

Ok so I have a tab for 'ringtones' - how the hell do I put a ring tone in it?

How's this for simple? I just tried it with the ringtone sound from the mobile phones in the "Global Frequency" pilot, and my favourite cartoon theme "Batfink". :)

Before you start - if you have an MP3 source, import it into iTunes then right-click on the song/file and select the convert to AAC option, then read below...

Not sure if someone has shared this, but like every other audio "distinction" in iTunes, "ringtones" are no different. They are AAC files with a special name. In this case, the extension is "M4R".

  1. To add a ringtone to your iPhone, using Windows Explorer or the Finder just duplicate and rename any AAC file to be "M4R", then double-click on it. This file will be added to your iTunes library automatically.
  2. Now, click on your iPhone in iTunes, and go to the ringtone section. You should now see your new ringtone. If you want to be sure about the sync, feel free to click "selected ringtones" and check off the file explicitly, though this shouldn't be required.
  3. Now SYNC your phone. You're Done!
