...a mate's experience at the weekend:

"Sold my old vectra last week, the thing was falling to pieces, air con went tits up, passenger window fell off its rail. The list goes on and on.

I was looking for a cheapo replacement, something cheap to tax and insure, found a few little runabouts. Ended buying a Ford Ka off eBay. Pics looked fine and it was only £560. I called before I went just to make sure it wasn’t f**ked. She assured me it only had a couple of marks, inside was nice and clean etc.

Went to pick it up on Sunday, the car was parked on a really steep driveway in front of her garage. The car looked crap straight away, dents all over it, a complete mess. I got inside the thing and it stunk, had obviously been sat there for months on end, and there were really bad stains on all the seats. Oh, and the inside door panel was hanging off, someone had tried to gaffer tape it on!

I started it up and she had left it in gear, so I learched forward like a t*t, she said sorry I forgot to mention that, so I put in neutral and the car started rolling backwards. Bloody rolled straight down the drive and into the garage door behind! Luckily there was a wheelie bin to cushion the blow. I got out, somewhat shocked and she said ‘oh forgot to mention the handbrake didn’t work properly as well”. At this point her husband had come out after hearing all this, and asked her if she had told me about it being in gear and the handbrake. Bit feckin late for all that I said. I told them there was no way on earth I was going to pay for this piece of sh1t. He tried giving it the old ‘you won the bid, you have to pay now’, just told him where to go, and that he didn’t list all the damage etc. It was miss sold etc. I ended up throwing him the key and walking off."

There really are some idiots using scambay

Too many crap cars are on sale with "exceleent condition" plastered all over the ads. I too went to see a Ford Ka a while ago. The guy assured me it was in perfect condition; the thing was a pile of cack; he said I was being too harsh as I was comparing it against my A8 (its 11 years old dunce). The ford Ka was was on a 2002 plate, he had the nerve to say you've only come 50miles up the road to see it anyway! T055er

Bad news - you have to be really careful buying a car from eBay. I have bought and sold many on their including my current A6.

However, the more common the car, I think the more careful you need to be. Small cars like that are easily abused. Probably other things completely wrong with it too.

Go and see them - although I have only seen one before I bought it!!!! All the rest were fine.

Ebay ? Pah ! See my 'grassing up a speeder' thread for my selling experience. Still getting speeding tickets now for the cnut who bought it. Regarding buying, I recently looked at a MK1 MR2 before bidding, Asian guy, in Leicester. "Yeah, mate, mint innit, perfect, I jus' can't insure it". (By now I should have known better), get there, the car is an utter wreck, the best thing was no MOT, no V5 (despite being listed in the ad), and the A pillar bent in so much the windscreen had cracked and lifted out slightly "dey all do that innit ?", yeah, f*ck off ...

As others say i wouldnt touch ebay. However think your friend shouldnt complain about it being in gear and he should have expected the worse from a car that has been sat still for a long time on a steep hill. Would have thought the first thing anyone does is check if you are in gear before starting up.

School boy error and i am sure your friend was a bit red faced.

I always leave mine in gear so it's a habit for me to check, but not to tell him the handbrake was shot is just retarded. Not sure about other people but I don't start a car with my foot on the brake pedal.

I had one really good one experience and one really bad buying off ebay.

Thing is at that price its only a few hundred quid above scrap value. There are some good deals around but used small cars are holding their value and selling quite well. At that price it was obvious it was going to be a piece of **** before even showing up.

My mate got an 03 ka for his mrs after she lent her polo to a friend and she totaled it.

I think he paid around a grand for it, accept a little wear to the drivers seat and a small bit of rust on one of the wheel archs it was near enough mint. It had done 40,000 miles.
