nordberg
Honestly.....who in their right mind would pay that? Visited the stealers as my red brake warning is becoming more frequent. Asked the service reception for a price and nearly passed out.
Mook
Labour will be the biggest part of that at £100 or so + VAT. Pads should only be about £70 from a dealer, or get some OEM ones from German and Swedish or Euro Car Parts for about half that.
shark_90
RED brake warning? That's not your pads mate. Pad warning is yellow.
cruiser647
Brake fluid level?
nordberg
Service guy assures me the red display is pads and orange is fluid??!!
shark_90
Er, nope! RTFM! Orange (yellow) is always warning number 1, red warning means you should stop driving the car! What does the warning look like? Exclaimation mark?
nordberg
Yes. Exclamation mark with 3 beeps.
Drinks
Is it just on start up (intermittently) and then goes away? Have you had the relay update done on your car?
nordberg
It comes on 90% of the time when starting. It also comes on (very rarely) when driving. Just spoken to another stealer who concurs it is fluid. I checked the fluid and it looks fine? I suppose I will need to book it in and get it looked at. Really fecks me off that the people wanting to charge me the best part of £200 to do a job can't even identify the fault. Useless.
shark_90
On a B7 I think there's a recall or something along those lines that fixes this problem. But it's nothing to do with your pads mate.
c4a5er
Just to add further confusion, as pads wear, pistons move further out of calipers, fluid level drops. so fluid level warning can indeed indicate pad wear. Chaser...
shark_90
Totally agree with that however he mentioned that he checked the fluid and it's fine. Welcome to TSN mate, what do you drive?

So he did. I was just thinking of times when braking on steep hills had caused fluid to move away from float in brake reservoir when level is barely above minimum. Quite common on some makes but don't know if Audi suffer with this. Thanks for the welcome. I've just bought my first ever Audi, a 57reg. a4 2.0tdi s line, special edition. Still smiling after three weeks! Chaser...
