so. no longer with my audi a3 as its wrote off and now in the market for a car

1 series have always interested me and looking on auto trader and you can pick up some nice ones for a good price ( lots of options for 8 - 9k)

some basic q's really.

what are things to look out for on these when buying 2nd hand ? known probs etc?

what is the sat nav like? does it include europe? is there speed cam options?...any tried it in comparrison with the audi sat nav plus?

what are audio options like? speakers? mp3's etc? I had the bose option on my a3 and i liked it a lot so be hard for me to go with a basic speaker set up again?

also what model is best for insurance purposes... i had a measley 1.6 sport petrol in my audi, although not powerful it was all i needed and kept my insurance down (under 25 driver here!)

thanks for any input

No idea not heard anything bad about any really.

Sat-nav not bad not great. It looks good but doesn't have full postcode like the Audi system. Its got good looking maps but again no alerting to speed cameras though you can do something to get them to appear but you would have to look at the map all the time so pointless.

Standard speakers average like most motors. But get the full Prof DSP system and its as good as anything. You can however upgrade the basic system to something decent without too much money. See thread in the 5 series forum.

Engines go for a diesel and if you can get an efficient dynamic car (stop start) they will be kinder on the pocket too. +++

My partner had a 120d ('06) a while back; cracking car to drive +++ The main points are covered in the brief review I did after we'd got rid of it which is here http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/tyresmoke-reviews/107182-end-term-review-120d-se.html.

No major problems, though the pain quality was not great. I think the facelift (07?) improved on some of the interior quality issues...

We replaced it with an A3 funnily enough; the A3 feels more spacious inside, and definitely has a bigger boot. Interior quality is much better, but I think the 1 series came with more standard kit (PDC, iPOD connector, steering wheel controls etc) and was a nicer drive.

I swapped my A3 2.0t for the 135i and it was definately the right choice!

I'd consider a 120d coupe if I were you. Should be able to get a real second hand or demo bargin next year.

The basic sound system is poor - I've got the HiFi upgrade and it's not much better if I'm honest. Should have gone for the full logic - guessing that's on par with the Audi Bose which was brilliant - but it's far too expensive. If you're into sounds, an after market set up is better value.

SatNav is an expensive option - again after market one is much better value

RFT's will be expensive, so if a second hand one looks a bit bald, insist on new tyres as part of the deal

Good luck!

  • 1 month later...

Dont get carried away with the claimed consumption figures on the 118 and 120d. The wife has a 118d and on a mix of motorway and around town doesnt even get 40mpg. I used the car for a 400 mile round trip on motorways and only saw 43mpg.

RFT are absolutely rubbish. Not only do they kill the ride but the Pirellis we have offer no grip in snow! A few weeks ago it was stuck on our drive for 3 days as it couldnt get up the road. My 3er with fatter lower profile std rubber had no problems!

Make sure you get a full alignment check too as this costs a fortune and kills rubber very quickly if it is not right.

Overall, wish we hadnt bought it. It doesn't offer enough over a golf with hindsight. Forget badge snobbery and get 2.0 GT TDi golf instead. It is a much better (and better looking) car!
