gazza99
Can anyone help me please , Just put a deposit down on an Audi A3 . the car is 12 months old and the previous owner must have smoked 20 a day in the car for every day he owned it. The dealership have promised to valet the car before I pick it up , but will this get rid of the smell of fags long term or will I have to resort to air fresheners? are there any specialist products on the market to fix this permanently ? Scotty
Not sure how good the result will be but if you need a spray then I found that the Halfords Anti-Tobacco Spray worked realy well. It seemed to be a neutraliser but also has an orangey smell. I still use it occasionally in my car just to freshen it up despite no one smoking. JonC
I heard an old wives tale ages ago (but one which may be worth considering) which suggested leaving an open jar of coffee in the car overnight - the granules apparently absorb any vapours and smells. IIRC, bicarbonate of soda has the same effect.
steelwind101
As the other two posters have suggest there are various ways of getting rid of the smell, it isnt going to be permanent. What you can smell is embedded in the car and often an odor neutraliser is the best way to go after a really good over. The headliner is your main problem b/c thats where most of the smoke will be and most pros will not even touch that with a wet formula. If you have a wetvac shampoo the floors and seats, given the weather i would go for a dry a carpet and upholstry cleaner, this would be a foam type product. Ones that i know work (i buy cars from auctions on a few occasions) are the Clearkote Heavy Duty interior cleaner and the Autoglym one, i would advise soaking our interior with any of the we products in this weather as you may never get it dry and then you will get rotting. Some pros use a bacteria and smell killing agent that is for smoke, wet smells etc and it comes in a fog type container and is set off in the car like a clear smoke machine. Wipe down all the surfaces inside the car with All Purpose Cleaner make sure you open the doors and get the sides of the dash, air vents, underside of rear view mirror. If the hatch has a tray, clean that down too. I would then spray everything with Odor Elimnator or any number of anti smoke products. Meguiars Odor Elim. is fragence less which is what i prefer. Tipex
I was once told (along with a few other Scumballers) that an ozone generating machine will get rid of any odour permanently. Apparently you can rent them but I have no idea where from or how much it costs, or even if it's true!
steelwind101
Yup OZONE will totally work! They are often used in public bathrooms and cleaning up after people have died, they might be a bit hard to get our hands though.
Tipex
Just gave it a quick google, and you can buy them from Amazon of all places?! COMMERCIAL OZONE GENERATOR AIR PURIFIER BUSINESS: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo Not cheap though, I wonder if any valeters/detailers would have such a machine, might be worth giving a few a ring? edit: just looked on Ebay, loads of em for silly money, no idea if they would be suitable though? ardandy
A good wet/dry clean of the interior usually does the trick! Executive Detailing - Professional valeting An example of a 13 year old car we worked on that had a chain smoking owner all of its life!

JonC
It's highly unlikely then that you'll ever get rid of it. Fecking smoking fecks, huh?!
