kirium225
Any recommendations on a good product out there to give the engine bay a good clean. Also the dos and don't when cleaning, or is it best to leave to the professionals.....thanks..
Ska
Depends on how many miles its covered, but AG machine cleaner is good. Spray on agitate with a stiff paint brush then rinse off with a hose not a high pressure pressure washer. You can also use an APC for less soiled areas of the bay like megs APC diluted 4:1 then rinse. I cover any electric connectors with small plastic freezer bags JIC. Also dressing the black bueaty covers of the engine can be dressed with either AG vinyl & rubber care or aerospace 303. The engine bay below has covered 148k miles on my 12 year old A8
steelwind101
Hi! Thats a great looking clean engine SKA! Here is my approach, which is basically the same but i just use a different product at the end. I use foil to protect all the parts that water should not get on too, battery connectors etc. Spray the engine down with APC/AG Engine and Machine Degreaser etc. Agitate with soft brushes. Rinse Then i use Sonus Motor Kote. You spray it on quite liberally and then close the bonnet, start up the car for a 5-10 mins and when you open up an even looking finish! JonC
Yep, same method for me, followed by Black WOW (expensive but awesome durability) on the black plastic bits

Dave
So, let me get this straight in my mind.. you cover some areas.. could you elaborate a bit more for me? Then spray on the cleaner. agitate with brush (all areas?.. and hard to reach areas?) then hose off.. Do you dry with a towel? Take car for short run to dry engine bay? Thanks Dave
steelwind101
Hi Dave To give you a better idea, Under the engine you want to cover using either foil or cling film anything that you dont want to get wet. Main points i look out for: Air intake (remove air filter if you have an aftermarket style one with exposed filter, then block the hole). Battery Terminals Oxygen sensor connector sometimes has exposed wires so i cover that. Spray on the Autoglym Engine and Machine degreaser, i start spreading it over the engine using one of those "fake" Swisswax bushes from Ebay, a soft old tooth brush and sometimes and old microfibre. After spreading it and agitating on the dirty areas i blast off with the hose. For me, i will just use a clean, old MF to dry off any excess. With the Sonus product i use, all i have to do is spray that over the engine, be it metal or plastic. Close the hood, pop the engine on and done. You just spray a good decent layer everywhere. If your going to use a product like AG bumper care, chrome polish you might want to dry the engine more throughly. It all depends also on what engine you have and what is under the bonnet. The Auris for example is mainly plastic all across the top. So from new i would just open the bonnet every 6 months, wipe the plastic down and dress with a bumper dressing product. Then hit the top of the engine with a QD and im done. The Jazz had more visable engine parts and you could see the metal sides of the engine by the wings, i would get in there with a cleaner wax and just shine them up after washing. In a similar way, some SRP works a treat on the painted lips and edges on the engine. On the inside of the bonnet you might want to clean that bit of plastic/rubber whatever it is. If you go and drive the car to dry it, you might well end up getting it too hot to dress and a create alot of water marks on the exhaust manifold etc. Geoff
