Elephant or Admiral?

Mollox, don't go with More Than, they're utterly fecking useless, trust me. They insured my car one year, went to renew, I noticed they had got my reg wrong on the renewal paperwork when it came through. I called the moron in India who said that as I had changed my reg (which I hadn't done!), I had to pay a £50 admin fee. I explained that it was a typo on their part, the letters were simply transposed, the reg had been the same the previous year and the paperwork was in order then, they proceeded to tell me that my previous years insurance would have been invalid because the reg was wrong. :smashfreak:

Just got my renewal quite through from esure... gone up from £450 last year to £515!

For the GTI, MB? If so, that does seem a bit on the steep side. My modded GTI is that per annum (38yr old with 2 yrs NCB).

Seems that adding a non-standard air filter adds £15 to the premium. (I have pipercross cotton filters fitted to both.

When going through my Admiral 'family cover', I went back and added the filters to each car, went up by £30. They also had a huge tick list of mods you can have.

Everything affects it mate...

Address / Car / Claims / Convictions / NCB... the list goes on. Anything they can do to squeeze money out of you, they will. I wouldn't be surprised if colour, driver weight and hair colour is added to that list next year.

"Sorry Sir, your premium has risen by £560 because we don't usually insure fat gingers in bronze Porsches"

...that doesn't mean me by the way LOL!!!!

I know that everything effects it - but that was sort of my point - for EXACTLY the same profile (me) they were looking to chage a £700 difference between two cars even though by value they were not massively dissimilar - hence my point that even though everything is taken into account the big two are the car and the claims (then age, experience and NCB)......

Ahh....

Well, I did today :o

TDK you were absolutely, utterly right. I am no longer with MORE > THAN and am now with Admiral at a price that I am happy with.

Expect to read a lot more once I have calmed down.

Good advice, and proved completely correct, thanks +++

Sounds like you had fun, I'm with Direct Line as is my better half and they have been very cheap for both of us.

I even got them to add all my options so I was covered if anything happened to the car and it didn't make a jot of difference to the premium.

Will have to wait for the More > Than story.

OK, I was going to write my letter of complaint to M > T and then post here but what I'll do is share today's experience, listen to your advice and then respond to M > T.

Before I start, it seems that there is a lot of "bait" out there to "hook" clients in and all I can say from my experiences this week is that all is often not what it initially seems.

As some of you will know from this thread, I was not happy with Admiral last week due to the differences between online quoting and actual pricing, and specifically the explanations and reasoning behind the differences as well as their attitude in explaining these to me. As a result I decided not to proceed with Admiral and sought other policies.

I've had travel insurance with MT in the past and have never had issues: in hindsight this is perhaps because it was all done and paid for online and I never had to claim from them.

Anyway, I went online and decided to get a quote from M > T. Seemed like an easy process, and having answered everything 100% honestly as you'd expect, I was very pleased to find a quote over £100 cheaper than Admiral and with half the excess to boot. So much so that I went for a few extra add-ons. Now, I could have just bought it online but being the fastidious fellow that I am, I decided to call them to run through everything in minute detail so that both parties were completely satisfied and that all doubt could be avoided.

And I did just that. After a couple of further tweaks we ended up at a final premium just £1 more than the original (and unattainable) Admiral quote.

I was still happy.

As part of my rigorous questioning, I explained that I'd be going to France (Le Mans) and so I'd need my documents in hand and also confirmation of Green Card etc. Knowing that Admiral charged £7.50 for n/d document delivery I expected this to be no problem. It turned out that they couldn't do next day but that my documents would arrive in around 3 working days. That put it on the cusp of either arriving on time or being too late once I'd left. I was very clear that I wanted documents but they reassured me that with a Policy Number and the contact number they gave me, I could assure any authorities that I did indeed have full and appropriate insurance. Not great but if they say it works, who am I to argue?

Anyway, then, through more questioning it transpires that their Green Card cover was only 3rd party and that in order to be Fully Comp abroad, I'd have to declare the trip to them and pay an admin fee of approx £15-20. Not exactly ideal I thought but given the price, I could live with that and asked them to go ahead. Except they couldn't do that for a couple of days until the policy was live on the system and asked me to call back on Tuesday to confirm and they assured me it was fine. Again, not quite how I'd have liked it but there was plenty of reassurance. I asked if they could email me the relevant documents but apparently they couldn't - reasonable expectation I thought but still I was calm.

I should note that this was for cover starting at midnight tonight (ironically exactly now that I'm typing this) hence me being quite meticulous about ensuring that my new pride and joy was properly insured.

So we went ahead with the payment, it went through (of course :P ) and I was told I was insured, given a policy number and then got a (vague) email welcoming me to M > T.

So far, kind of so good I suppose?

Fast forward to today and I was getting a little itchy about the green card and so called them (I should add that all calls get routed to what sounds like India - no bad thing in itself but in my experience it makes it harder/more frustrating to deal with the finer points of any conversation). I spoke to a friendly enough chap, explained that I'd just taken out a policy and asked if I was able to firm up the Fully Comp Green Card for my impending trip. He said yes, took some details, made a note of the date and then there was quite a wait while he double-checked details with his manager.

When he came back and apologised saying they wouldn't be able to do it I was pretty shocked, annoyed and already worried that I wouldn't be able to take the new car to Le Mans - something I've been looking forward to doing for weeks. The woman yesterday told me it was a formality, it should have been a formality yet suddenly (once they had my money) there was a problem.

As he tried to explain it to me, it got worse - I started to realise that what he was trying to tell me was not that they couldn't cover my jape to France but that they couldn't cover me/my car AT ALL....

This was at 5:15pm today with my temporary cover running out at midnight tonight...

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get to the bottom of WHY. All I kept getting was that my car was "Group 43" (WTF? Its 20...) and that I was 30 and that they couldn't cover me.

I pointed out that in completing the quote form I couldn't have been any more forthcoming about the fact that it was an M3 (they had the reg) and that I was 30. I completed their form, they calculated a quote for me and I paid the money they asked for. Still I got the mumblings about "Group 43" and realised that I wasn't going to win this one.

What pissed me off even more was that it was ME that had to phone and wondering at what point they were going to tell me that I didn't actually have insurance afterall, given that I needed cover in less than 7 hours' time.

Its quite simple really - M3 V8 = insurance nightmare, I'm 30 and still a risk and therefore I should pay a high premium. Fine, I factored that in and then paid it.

But to turn it around like that and not even tell me is just crazy. They offered "7 days free insurance" (but not including appropriate cover for Le Mans so actually useless) and then a refund. I then spoke to a manager again tonight who asked me to wait until the morning when the accounts dept would be open so he could confirm how much they would refund me. I politely pointed out that I could tell him the amount right then (apart from my expenses incurred which I would duly assess and pass on). They've promised to get back to me by 2pm tomorrow and I've let them know that if its not sorted by then i'll just charge their asses back.

So at this point I'm down 2k in insurance and have paid for 2 policies but at least the M3 is covered.

Just incredible. Am I going mad or is that just plain RUBBISH?

Mollox - that sucks mate. Incompetence of the highest order.

In future, you need to be less honest mate!

My BMW was listed as a 3.0SD for a year. It was a mistake on their system as they had the reg. When they changed it to a 3.0D (lower group) not only did they try to raise the premium but also charge me an admin fee!!!! It took me many phone calls to get to speak to someone with 2 brain cells who simply laughed it off, changed it back, and gave me some money back!

I could write a very long list of imcompetent experiences i've had with insurance companies, but why bother! it's a necessary evil that will never change. You are simply a number on their database, nothing more nothing less.

More than are absolutely usless when it comes to communicating and Mollox I'm sorry to hear of your dealings with them. Settling claim wise they are ok.

We're with directline for both car and home, had the misfortune of claiming on both and I cant fault them. They're always cheapest for us, on our new car I've declared 18 options and they did not charge any extra.

If you haven't already I recommend giving them a try. Good luck.
