DVD Recorder and NTL Cable?

We bought a Phillips DVD recorder and tried to connect it up to our NTL cable box - but as soon as we tried to record anything the picture froze and it came up with 'disc error'.

Having tried everything, we took it back to the shop to say it was faulty. They tested it and it worked fine on an ordinary tv signal!

So took it home again and tried again and it was still faulty.

Eventually I phoned NTL customer services and a technician said this was correct and it would not record cause of the interactive nature?? We took the thing back and got a refund.

However, we do want a DVD recorder as the video is now on the tip. I know jack sh*t about this subject, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Interactive nature??? wierd.

I would guess the problem is you were trying to record off the tv ariel. Did the DVD Rec have an RGB input or anything? If so, you can record via that, but you'll have to set all your records manually (no using video plus or anything)

No we used the scart sockets and tried every combination with them, including cable>Tv>DVD and still it wouldnt record.

We managed to get the signal through the DVD box and we also were ok playing DVDs - but it just wouldnt record. Well it would record for 2 seconds then freeze the tv picture. Must have wasted 6 hours trying to get it working.

yeah if it was a PPV or movie channel it may have had macrovision...hmm how did you connect it? NTLscart>DVDscart>TV?....i'm not sure if the dvd recorder has RGB in....so maybe try going into the NTL box settings and changing the output from RGB to composite...and see if it still doesn't record.

u got a make and model of your NTL box? And which philips DVD recorder have you got?

Cable box is Pace DiTV 2000

DVD is Phillips DVDR70 (I think)

Not sure abount the settings you guys are talkin about, but I did try all connection possibilities.

It wouldnt record any programs - tried standard channels (BBC1 etc) - we dont have an aerial so they all come through the box.

Didnt change any settings on the cable box though.

Seems very curious, had a look round, and cant seem to find a manual for your pace box anywhere. On the pace website, it had a brief manual for the next model up, a DiTV 4000, and that seemed to suggest a DVD Recorder should plug straight in.

And to be honest i cant see why, if a video works, a DVD Recorder wont.

I know a couple of people at work have NTL, so i'll ask around, see if theres a manual i can have a look at.
