casual-moron
hi all im sorry to be asking irritating questions on my first post here, but i am trying to decide between a 535d or an a6 (and leaning strongly towards the 5) and was hoping you might be able to give me some advice basically i was looking at picking up either a pre-reg (or mostly new) 09 car, which there seamed to be plenty about for between 35-40k the only thing is when looking at the various options (beyond the usual media pack / leather ect) & i was eyeing up the comfort seats, and (to a lesser degree) the active cruise control as being top of my wish list given i rack up a fair amount of motorway miles however the bulk of the approved used ones i've found to date tend to have neither fitted .... so here comes my obvious questions 1. how awful by comparison are the regular seats (the dealer said they've got electric back / tilt, but you get to move them back and forth manually, is that true?) 2. does the active cruise control actually work well enough to be worth bothering with, or is it just a bit of a gimmick and the standard one is good enough? many thanks
DaveP
Mine is 05. They aren't that bad, but they aren't perfect. The headrest does not move(!) Feels like you could do with more lumbar. (note- I have yet to sit in a comfort seat equipped car). I have done over 800 miles straight in it and have been perfectly comfortable, but I always think they could be better. Yes you move them forward/backwards manually. I wouldn't be bothered about active cruise (although admittedly never tried it), but mine has Heads Up and it is a great addition! As with almost all options, probably not worth the money, but great. Combined with sat nav instructions displayed in front you it certainly helps when covering large distances. casual-moron
thanks for your reply davep, the only other thing i'd ment to ask, is one of the cars i was looking at has the panoramic sunroof fitted (which normally i wouldent bother with) - does anyone know how much headroom this leeches? as im somewhat on the large side
gizze
Well Daves' car belonged to Scott on here before and he is 6'4" or 6'5" and he had no problems. It really is a nice addition. The new seats come with far better headrests, the standard seat and sport seat now gets the comfort seat headrest which is where I found them a problem, more so as a passenger though to be honest. 5er vs A6. Well I had the 535d sport touring for a year and 20 odd thousand miles and I am now in a 3.2fsi A6 Quattro Avant. If you only have one car then the 5 series is a on a whole other level. It is far more driver focused and you do find yourself going out for a drive just for the sake of driving, which never happens in the Audi. But, the Audi is a much more comfortable car, it soaks up poor roads in a way the BMW never does if you go SE, plus the interior is very nice as are the toys you get, or you can get if you pay for them. But personally I think a slight compromise on the comfort side of things is well worth it for the handling and dynamics that the BMW offers. When you fancy a change Dave let me know and we can have a swap!!
casual-moron
Hi gizze, thanks for the reply sadly it looks like imp going to have to abandon the 5 in favour of the Audi mostly because I just couldn’t track down any reasonable finance on the bmw whereas the Audi dealers opening gambit of a grand down and 4% made for an altogether more doable prospect.... it also helps that in s-line/le mans trim the Audi has more or less everything I’d want fitted without troubling the options list (I’d probably spring for the iPod connection and stereo upgrade given a choice, but equally I could live without) having had a go in both, I must agree that the bmw is undoubtedly just a better drivers car (the 535 absolutely trounced it, and suspect the 530 would as well) but equally the a6 isn't exactly a "bad" car and in general I thought the cabin felt a nicer place to be anyway, I wanted to thank you both for your advice, and I’ll now banish myself to the Audi section of the forums!
