Been following this and would like to make a few comments;

The new R is not the latest 2.0 engine ( lighter, with the twin balancer shafts, chain driven cam etc) It's basically the S3 engine.

It's a huge price for a Golf ( forget the hype.... 99.9% of the population will regard it as 'another tarted up Golf' )

The Mk6 Gti is also very expensive, I like the looks of the mark5 & 6, and when the Mk6 is priced up my order would be £30k and that's before I visited VWRacing for a few goodies!

They are going to be in very short supply....... and then VW can charge the earth for them and make lots of money ( think their profit per unit was exceedingly low last year ?? ). As has already been suggested ' never mind the price it's a rare car sir, only 500 available for the whole year, and then probably no more made sir, you need to be quick sir......

There was mention of the RS3.... yeah and it will be at least£45+k -- the local dealer had a TT RS in the showroom and the sticker was £53k.

I have an A4 Sline quattro, 5 years old now, that cost me £27k new with nearly all boxes ticked, and when I went to look at the A5 2.0 Sportback ( loved the look) it was £44k with only a few boxes ticked. We looked at the A3S3 Sportback but even the dealer said 'it's a bit long in the tooth' -- I mean it hasn't even got the latest 2.0 engine yet .

I have no experience of the R32,

I like the look but economy is dreadful if you do a lot of miles. They can be cheap to buy -- local dealer has three, low mileage Mk5s all under £22k.

Just because we love 'um doesn't mean the rest of the world does.

Having said all this if I was definately about to buy a new car it would be a tough call, I like the Golf R and I like the Sportback, the A4s are all too expensive and half a size bigger than my current version.

Oh and anybody in the East Berks area with a R32 please enlighten me with a ride...... it is a lovely sound !!

Latest EVO magazine has a first test of the R. They like it. Alot. (It's still waaaaay too expensive though. :P )

Whereas the Autocar write up can be described as "luke warm" !! I agree with you Garcon (and you know I love my .:R Golf's) but the Mk6 R20 is looking like it may price itself away from the loyal enthusiasts !! +++

I do hope not, as it will be a disaster for the marque.

Oh, I saw you the other day Tosh, in the Blackhall area. The R was looking pretty clean. Have you detailed the beast?

If you'd looked closely Jon, it's a feckin' disgrace !! A decent AG treatment in November is the best it's seen by way of TLC lately !! :o

But aren't all Autocar writeups for VAG products 'lukewarm'?

And it wouldn't be the first time the enthusiasts have been priced out... perhaps the first by VW, but look at the B5 RS4, B7 RS4,

RS6 ( ok it's a barge, but still very quick ! )

TTRS ( well laden Boxster S is cheaperthan TTRS)

RS3 - will be if it arrives

The price is a sign of the times. A base 3 door A3 is touching £18k nowadays!

Personally, it's not for me. But for people to say it's crap because it doesn't have a VR6 is a little short sighted.

People might not, but most hardcore R32 fan`s do feel its lost something. BUT I agree with you, its not crap and it is indeed the sign of the times.... everything is going up in price, why not cars too. :D

I`m happy with my R32, don`t want anything else.........

Riz :)

It was generally a very positive review but I did wonder to what extent they really tested it in in those wintry conditions. They seemed to make a few assumptions.

True, but I'd trust even the most cursory EVO test than anything in any other car mag.

It isn't fair to simply say it's rubbish cos it hasn't got the R32's V6, but to those for whom it makes any difference it is definitely true to say the engine doesn't have the character of that V6. If EVO's test is anything to go by, the R does at least partly make up for that in different ways though.

I was almost blinded by the reflection of the low sun off your R32 earlier this morning Tosh, when I saw you on Drum Brae South. Very sparkly +++
