Snoopy
As title. How long did it take before yours started to show the dreaded white worms?
JonC
In 2.5 years of MKV ownership and Monza II's, not one sign of it. Look after them and your much more less likely to get it.
mikemod
Mine have lasted about 4 years but now most are showing signs of the white worm..
Tarmac_Terrorist
3 years and 3 months and not a white worm in sight either. If you look after them they should be fine. Wash road salts off weekly in winter and importantly, apply a decent sealant monthly. Keep a regular eye open for any stone chips in the lacquer and touch up if necessary. I think it depends on how you look after them. If you only typically wash your car monthly or less in winter then the elements are going to eat away at them. I understand that UK road salts are for some reason the most corrosive in Europe which is probably why manufacturers continue to fit these type of wheels - I suspect the corrosion issue is much less common in other countries. Snoopy
Any recommendations for products you guys have used that seem to help / work would be great. Thanks.
JonC
After washing alloys with wool mitt or likewise to avoid damaging the surface of the alloy with dirt/grime etc, gently dry the surface and apply 2 or 3 coats of AutoGlym Super Resin Polish. Follow by 2 or 3 coats of AutoGlym Extra Gloss Protection. Do this once a month for lasting protection
Tarmac_Terrorist
I also usually use what Jon recomended. I only actually polish the wheel twice a year but top up with the Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection monthly in winter / every 2 months summer. There is an even quicker and easier spray and wipe sealant to use called Red Mist, made by Dodo Juice. That's also good for 1 month durability. Probably an easier option if you dislike cleaning polishing etc! With this stuff you could do all four wheels in less than 4 mins
RedRobin
.... Mine lasted about 2 years and then the white worm spread and spread and spread in spite of more regular washing. Anything such as a small stone chip can set it off. It was after a spell of bad weather and having to drive past gritter lorries that set mine off. The weather was too foul for me to want to wash the car and even just jet hosing didn't keep it at bay. It's all very well of VW/BBS to supply fancy wheels but not all of us are keen detailers or can be arsed to clean their car every week without fail. My cure was to have my Monza 18's powdercoated in Smoked Chrome - I actually prefer their look now anyway. Getting some lightweight OZ alloys very soon but I'll keep my Monza's stored. JonC
Now RR, if you'd looked after your Monzas properly (and I do mean thoroughly, regularly and properly) you wouldn't have got white worm as bad as you did I'm sorry, but I when I look at your alloys now, I see 17's when I know they're 18's because of the powder coating. I fully appreciate why you decided to coat them, too. Please don't take this as a criticism as I think your car looks awesome; one of the best, if not the best, MKV GTI I've ever seen

If you saw my powdercoated 18's in real life I assure you, you wouldn't think 17's. I'm flattered by your very high praise But these babies are going on soon anyway - OZ Alleggerita HLT Titanium 18's : - Weighing about 7kg instead of 12kg Monza's = Improved handling feedback. Snoopy
I actually quite like them. Around £1500 with decent tyres im guessing. Edited August 23, 2009 by Snoopy

Easy to clean as well ....Easier to clean the brake calipers too. I'm going to Zaino them before fitting. The Monza's are very easy to clean as well - More a matter of opportunity in the winter months, but the white worm experience has taught me to make more effort! RedRobin
Liking those fella.... will your modding ever end? Riz ....I was convinced it would end a couple of years ago! But it's a very slippery slope and not helped by specialist GTI forums! It's 'safer' on TSN - Is it because TSNers are more mature?
RedRobin
Agreed.. nice alloy choice ....Cheers, Dave Team Dynamics offer a similar weight of wheel and they are about half the price and made in the UK. But they don't have that style which the Italians are so good at.
Tarmac_Terrorist
I like those wheels, there are quite a few options which seem to compliment the Golf shape / styling. I just feel that the Monza's are too much part of the MKV's identity to change....I have to ask myself the question, when is a Golf no longer a Golf? The original visual identity is reasonably important to me even for cars with lots of 'under the skin' mods.
Snoopy
Be interesting what wheels people think work well on the mk6 GTI. I quite like this one with the Interlagos wheels. Edited August 24, 2009 by Snoopy

It's also why I can't bear to sell mine! I've had an offer even without advertising them. I might even end up putting 'performance rubber' on my lightweight OZ's and just use them for track (or German "toll road";)).
RedRobin
.... I like those Interlagos wheels too, Geoff. Same as Scirocco? Love them on the Rocco but don't like body shape of the Rocco. That colour looks a fabulous green - I think it must be tree reflections. What colour is that GTI? Why didn't VW offer a green for the Mk6? My car feels good on The Ring - It's the suspension and Quaife which help......Oooh, and the reliable AP brakes! I don't drive on the limit though, but I still have great fun.
