theduisbergkid
I rent a decent sized office a short walk from my home, same village my kids to to school, great area, reasonable rent, landlord is a mate I've know since I was 4. All good. The thing is - I've got the office blues. The only window I have looks into a warehouse, which given how pretty the area is, is a nuisance. Plus, I can't help thinking renting anything is dead money. So, do I move house (been thinking about it for some time anyway) and get somewhere with an outbuilding I can convert ? Rent an office in town (I hate the thought of half an hour sat in traffic though), work from home (my home office is a good size, but the kids are too noisy), or what ? Any suggestions ? TDK.
Andy_Bangle
Look at the prices to rent an office in town then factor in the extra driving time/cost (more dead money as you would use it less) then perhaps the old office will look a little better - maybe even better after a coat of paint. Working from an office at home (in the same house) doesn't work for everyone as you may just end up looking after the kids, watching TV etc unless you have good disciple. In the longer term moving house sounds the best option if you can find somewhere you like and a buyer for Gimp Towers! Just my 2 kronks worth! theduisbergkid
Thanks Andy. My office is currently being redecorated as we speak (amazing how echoey it is with no flooring !). Driving into town would cost a packet, plus parking... Hmmm...........
shark_90
I have an office at home and although it can sometimes be hard to focus on working, it works for me. It helps that it's on another floor to the living area though, out of the way. I get great satisfaction from not having to leave the house/pay parking/put fuel in the car to get to work every single day.

steve2
have you any room at all in your garden for an outside office?
Mook
I wouldn't work from home, because I like to keep the two separate. Any other offices more local to you?
theduisbergkid
Garden has room, but isn't far enough away from the kids. There are some other offices available nearby, but they're pretty grim and twice the price. I think I need to find a nice old barn or small rundown building and convert it into an office, ideally somewhere big enough that I can rent out some of the space as an additional office or flats maybe. Or just sit here moaning to myself.
Tarmac_Terrorist
I work from home a approx 3 days a week. I work in the corner of our bedroom. Not ideal but as the family has grown, the 3rd bedroom was needed for....well ...erm... a bedroom! The two kids (6 and 3) know to play quieter when i'm working as i'm on the phone most of the time. Self discipline is needed but it's never something that's bothered / affected me - just get my head down & get on with it. Have to say if I had a bigger garden then an out building of some sort would be nice and the perfect scenario.

mb
I have office above separate garage which works OK so the barn idea would be good for the future as you will still get the "separation" which is useful but whilst I know you appreciate the good points they really are most peoples dream so I would stick with it if I were you. Also remember if work from home you are liable for business rates/insurance etc. so not quite as immediately attractive as first think. In the short term try leaving for work 1/2 an hour earlier than usual, drive 5m, stop, repeat until you are at work & then repeat until the "I rent a decent sized office a short walk from my home, same village my kids to to school, great area, reasonable rent, landlord is a mate I've know since I was 4. All good." outweighs the lack of view... "Youth of today - don't know you were born" as my gran used to say !
Luke
Would a loft conversion work? You could make it an office with the option to convert to an extra bedroom if you decide to move. Would probably be far enough away from the kids/noise and would add value to your property in the longer term. Could all be done while you were at the office aswell. Seem to be a lot of shackles etc. attached to the wall for some reason:grin: Rich, I know the view isn't great but there's definitely more pro's than cons! Out in the provinces you know! Why not get a nice big TV and run a live feed from a camera mounted outside?

theduisbergkid
Well the decorators have finished, cleaner has been, new pictures up, and the missus dropped off a tub of olives for me. Suddenly the place doesn't look so bad
