[Audi A3/S3] What does the CD based Sat Nav look like?

Hello,

I'm looking at options for an A3 TDI Sport and I've noticed there are 2 different types of Sat Nav available. One is the DVD-based option and the other is titled "Audi Satellite Navigation System Cd-rom Based"

There is a big difference in price so I am interested to know what the CD-Rom version looks like (I already know what the DVD version looks like). I've had a search on the Audi website and on Google but can't seem to find any photos.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

That's because it doesn't actually look like anything... it's a boot mounted CD-ROM and control box, with the control keys down on the centre console. It doesn't have a map screen, it just shows turn instructions on the DIS and "speaks" them via the car radio. That's why it's so much cheaper than the DVD based one - oh and the CD's are one per country, where the DVDs are one for the whole of Western Europe.

IMHO the CD based sat nav is only for cheapskates.

Personally I would`t bother spending £1500 on a DVD based sat-nav...or for that matter £650 for the CD version....I just don`t need it....or more precisely I don`t drive the length and breadth of the country on business....A £200 portable sat-nav is just fine for me(and I hardly ever use it). That said if I was travelling around the UK on a regular basis and visiting clients then I`d bite the bullet and fork out the £££ for the DVD version.....I`v heard you can buy the DVD sat nav on e-bay for £500 and then get a ICE specialist to fit it for you for approximately £300....I`v seen a few posts from a tyre-smoke FM graigyb(I think) who runs a business that will fit a DVD based sat nav for you....Why not do a quick search and PM him(send a personal message) for some advice.....Having said all that the £1500 you`ll spend on a DVD sat-nav is one of the very few options(if not the only option) you`ll get a fair chunk of your money back on when the time comes to sell.....But I suppose that depends on the needs of the buyer but it should at the very least make your car a lot easier to sell......but we`v debated that argument many times on TS.

I can understand you not spending much on a sat nav if you hardly ever use it, but I use mine literally every day. And I certainly DIDN'T pay Audi's price - I ordered my car with a double DIN radio and fitted it myself - it's easy in a B7 A4 and a complete doddle in an 8P A3 (move at most 1 wire and a few seconds with VAG-COM).

And having had a window smashed by a light-fingered ar*ehole a few years ago to nick a Road Angel, I certainly would NEVER have a portable sat nav - even when removed they leave the tell-tale circle on the windscreen...

Your right about the tell tale sucker marks....Even when you clean the windscreen you can still see the dreaded circular invitation to scumbags....I have to admit though that I was very tempted to buy one off e-bay and get it fitted by a specialist....However, now I know it`s only a 15minute job I can see myself doing a quick search tonight.....It`s very tempting as my current portable sat-nav is 4/5yrs old and you can`t update the data base...(I think)....That said I`ll probably be getting a new car next year and if I do I`ll be following your example and sourcing the unit myself+++....I`ll have to beg steal or borrow the keys to remove the head unit and then hey presto I`ll have an integrated unit....How often I`ll use it is another matter though.....but for approximately£500 or what ever the next generation of units cost it will be a no brainer.....I just would`t pay the £1,500>£2k that most manufactures charge for something I know I`ll hardly ever use.

The keys can be purchased from any car shop and are only a few quid. If you go for the RNS-E then you will also get 2 x SD card slots that can play mp3 files, that are displayed on your DIS. You can also fit a Bluetooth module so all your contaxts will be displayed and with SDS (Speech Dialogue System) you can talk to the head unit and give commands for navigation, Radio and telephone.

It will be the best £500.00 you could spend on your next car.

To find out how easy it is to fit visit Audi Forum where there are sticky threads on how to fit them.

Dave, what about the BNS-5.0, not exactly a boot mounted unit and I think this is the one being referred to.

Can you not still order the previous DIS based BNS?

With Audi's stupid naming of their sat nav options (e.g,. RNS-C, RNS-D and RNS-E are all called Audi Navigation Plus) it's just about impossible to tell what's being discussed without a picture.

I'd still call the BNS5.0 a cheapskate option - if you want sat nav then why put up with a mono screen and per country CD maps?
