Honestly, drive both and find out. Its the best way. S8 looks a lot better IMO but 450 BHP is pretty crappy when BMW's 5.0 V10 gets 507BHP. Id' go for an RS 6 saloon as I don't like the way the C6 avant looks and get DMS to map it to 680BHP with a Miltek and and a performance filter they do 710BHP!

any comments please on both cars...........

RS 6 is a different league to the S8 - it's amazingly close to Porsche 997 Turbo fast (don't ask how I know), but can still carry a fridge in the back (of the Avant at least) or four adults plus luggage in comfort. The S8 is dynamically the better handling car of the two though - less nose weight so less understeer tendency, though the RS 6 hides it well with ESP at the cost of eating brakes quicker.

Servicing isn't too bad (oil's expensive as you'd expect) though it will probably want doing every 9000 miles or so. Maintenance is expensive - rubber will cost you £300 to £400 a corner depending on what you want, and will probably last 8k miles on mixed roads to perhaps 12k miles mainly motorway, and brake discs and pads are a grand. You'll probably change discs at the same time as pads, as the pads are very hard.

Real world, I reckon you'll perhaps average 15mpg on mixed roads and 19mpg on mainly motorway, with a motorway run coming in at about 20 to 22 mpg depending on how careful you are.

Who knows what depreciation will be like. I think they've held fairly well so far, but how well five litre turbos will hold when more come up 2nd hand, I don't know.

This is the problem I faced when looking at buying an RS6. I'd heard so many stories about them being taken with violence etc. The thought of waking up with a baseball bat in my face with someone demanding the keys put me off.

In fact I was at one dealership and I'd seen an RS6 go out and 3 weeks later it was back. Customer had been chased down the street for his car by a gang.

I would have loved an RS6, but I value my well being more. The S8 attracts very little attention and is not one of the sought after cars by the scrotes of this world.

The obvious thing is to buy both!

However, in the real world I wonder whether the s8 is a little 'anonymous' in comparison to the rs6. The rs is world renowned while the 8 is far less in your face interms of recognition in the street. What would clarkson buy?

Clarkson would buy a BMW or MERC or a VOLVO

HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT QUATTRO MEANS :roflmao:

Hello Roberto! Yes I know I've been remiss in not posting up a picture of the lovely wheels you sold me but I've been stuck in the South of France since we met.

I had a lot more fun out of my S6 than the RS6. (both old shape) Although the RS6 is initially very impressive for the first month it's hard 'all out' nature did begin to grate after a while whereas the S6 never failed to put a smile on my face.

Ordinarily I would be driving an S8 myself except for the fact that the 4.2 TDI is so good. Granted that the S8 is superior but the TDI it too close for me to justify the difference in ride & fuel consumption. (this is entirely a personal opinion)

I know this is an AUDI forum (so don't shout at me) but for that kind of money have you considered a second hand low mileage Ferrari 612 or a Maserati Quattroporte / Gran Tourismo.

The thought of waking up with a baseball bat in my face with someone demanding the keys put me off.

That was a consideration, but it's not such an issue thankfully, out here in the sleepy wilderness of Lincolnshire. It's mainly farm equipment that gets nicked round here - a high speed chase is anything over 10mph! :roflmao:

Personally I would always take an RS over an S especially as the D3 S8 is now going out of production whereas the RS6 has another year or so left. The only caveat for me would be the size of the fuel tank. IIRC the A6 tank is 10 litres less than the A8 (90 vs 80?) and you might already be surprised coming from a 3.0tdi A8 which will run all day without fueling.

As for handling I have to defer to Chris as he has owned all these cars, however, I am surprised that he says that the S8 handles better than the RS6. I have owned a D3 Sport (4.2 petrol) and SE (3.0tdi) and was never happy with the handling. Even with the MTM suspension upgrade which I tried to flog you Robert (and it is meant to be firmer than the S8) I stil felt the car rolled too much on cornering and raised the front too much when planting my right foot. Personal opinion...

The more I think about the more it seems a D4 A8 makes most sense. It is fresh out of the box and as well as having air springs you can get adjustable dampers which should fix the handling. In 4.2 guise (petrol or diesel), it could be the 3rd option?

PS After the DRC debacle of the old shape RS6 and B7 RS4, are there any damper failures on current RS6?
