Riz
I still don't get it.... It's an S3, same engine, turbo, halex etc, it's a bit bigger, a bit heavier not built as well and it's more expensive?? WTF?I would have to agree with you on this fella..... Volkswagen are just going on how successful the previous sales were of the R32`s and hoping the trend will continue... I would have the Audi S3.Riz
Mook
What? No price for probably the most expensive hatchback in the world. Pub bragging rights would be awesome.... "Just spent £30k+ on my new car and I've just spent another (let's guess) £10k getting it tuned." *smug* "I'm pushing 362HP now" "Dude, seriously, it's a Golf" It's all bollox. If the Golf R wasn't such a lard-arsed thing, it'd be a shed load quicker anyway. Rip out the weight and get the power to weight ratio up over 300bhp per tonne. A tuned Golf R with 362bhp is only 230ish bhp/tonne. My 19 year old Mk2 is over that with a mildly tuned 1.8T. Someone at VW is missing a trick. Colin Chapman really did know what he was doing :D

JonC
What do you lot want? Blood? Not every purchaser will be wanting to track it. Tracking it, or the need for such a blah per ton blah car won't be important for many buyers. If it is, a tuning package will sort that out. Even then, the new R tuned at 360-odd bhp will be enough for most enthusiastic drivers. Ok, it won't tick the boxes of hardcore drivers, but is that really that bad? I think not Edited February 1, 2010 by JonC
Cuprabob
Just a 5-cyl, huh? You 6-cylinder lot must turn your noses up at those lesser engines Not at all, I've heard a lot of good sounding 4-pots. TTS sounds pretty good so since the R shares the same engine it may also sound quite good.
mb
What amuses me is the '8 caliper' braking system, now assuming they mean 8 pot calipers, what's the fecking point? once you go past even 4 pots, the gains are almost non existent, all your doing is adding weight where you don't want it? I think the idea behind all the pistons is that you run multiple pads which does allow for more pressue (at least that was the theory behind my 6 piston bike calipers with 6 individual little pads which worked really well until they overheated so maybe you are more correct than I first thought) + must be a law of diminishing returns re the unsprung mass - especially as my current bike has 4 piston single pad brembos which are fearsome... I'm amazed none of the bigger car companies haven't cottoned on the the less is more theory for the hot hatches, I reckon a lightweight no toys Golf GTi would sell in bucketloads. JonC
I reckon a lightweight no toys Golf GTi would sell in bucketloads. A very valid point. Riz
A very valid point. Probably for the enthusiast more so that the all-gadget everyday hot hatch driver, I suspect? Going by the past even the job-bloggs consumers buy hardcore stripped out versions because they are the "top" models etc. Mini Cooper Works S Clio V6 Clio Cup Ferrari 360 CS Ferrari 430 Scud 911 GT3 Megane F1 R26 I think Renault is one manufacturer which has been pushing out stripped out cars to the mass market for sometime now....... Volkswagen could do it but I doubt they want to venture into that market just yet..... imagine a GTi ClubSport which handles better than the R Golf for less money? That would be a sales disaster in the making. The R Golf has come very early on in the new MK6`s life-cycle..... I`m betting Volkswagen may do a big facelift which will affect the R Golf...... perhaps I predict the Audi S3 will get some tweeks with a 5/10bhp power upgrade to its engine in its next update... then the Volkswagen Golf R will follow.... that`ll really upset buyers..... for Audi not to increase the S3 in power to create a gap I would be suprised. Having driven a Audi S3, eventhough the drive wasnt for me, I would say it would my choice in cars as you just get way more for your money compared to the Golf R. But both are aimed at different kinds of people.... I would imagine that the Audi S3 is way more refined and better interior finishes compared to the Golf..... for me I didnt like that.... I wanted a car I could feel and hear.... As for the way a car sounds... comes down to a few things, mainly the engine and exhaust system.... if Volkswagen have paid enough attention in this department the car will sound good or at the very leaset better than the Audi S3 which sounds soooo boring.. too refined perhaps? If they have just stuck on the MK5 system hoping it will enhance what is already a dull sounding engine then they would be wrong. Lets hope that owners of the new Golf R enjoy their cars and its all that they would like it to be, afterall thats why be buy these kinds of cars.... because of the connection between owner/car etc and how they feel about it. garcon magnifique
I'm not sure VW would be well advised to try playing RenaultSport at their own game. And, taking the "less is more" theory on board, what would a stripped out, lightweight Golf R cost? £50k?
Tipex
Forget the R, the stripped Golf would have to be based on the gti, forget all that heavy 4wd stuff, just a basic golf Gti, no toys, thin carpet, no sound deadening, a lowered stiffened suspension and a little extra bhp. garcon magnifique
Polos used to be quite popoular in the junior rallying ranks. If I remember rightly the first ever diesel on an international rally was a Golf. For whatever reason the VW brand tends to have taken a back seat at VAG in terms of motorsport - touring cars has always tended to be Audi and Seat, endurance/GTs is/was Audi/Bentley, rallying has been Seat and continues to be Skoda (the new Fabia will do well), and the main VAG link in single seaters has also tended to be Audi. RedRobin
£30k plus £10k in tuning (£40k) ..... i think madness springs to mind..... seriously.... ....How about £25k 5 years ago on a Golf plus £15k in mods (£40k)?.. Oh, ok, you already know I'm mad And would I do it again? - You bet I would!! And I haven't finished yet either. I love every single mile I drive.
