Don't know where you read that? - it's not true...

Not sure if this is just wording but seems to suggest it's a variant of the v10??

Seems to be in most of the Audi press release coverage:-

A close relative of the V10 which powers the high-performance R8 sports car, the high-revving V8 engine delivers its output from a displacement of 4,163 cm3. Like nearly every Audi gasoline engine, this one also operates via direct fuel injection known by the abbreviation FSI. This same technology has propelled the Audi R8 racing car to four triumphs at the classic endurance race in Le Mans. The common-rail system generates up to 120 bars of pressure.

Another press release quote : -

"As well as the Quattro, the RS can trace its roots back to the R8 sports car, the V10 FSI engine from which provides the basis for the new hand-built, 4.2-litre V8 FSI engine that spins to 8,250pm, and delivers its 450PS peak output at this high point. A torque maximum of 430Nm is available between 4,000 and 6,000rpm, helping to power the new, 1725kg RS 5 to 62mph in 4.6 seconds and to an electronically governed 155mph

Pistonheads has it as derived from the V10 as well :-

That's "marketing bullshit", typical of trying to generate a "halo effect".

The RS5 engine IS exactly the same block and head as in the RS4 and V8 R8, but with an improved inlet system that has 2 throttle bodies and less restriction to the airflow. That's all they've done to generate the extra 30bhp (and no change in torque).

Is anyone actually getting one then?

I'll have had my RS4 3 years in a couple months so really it's time to move on but I don't think I am.

I can't justify the £60k cost, RS4 still looks the dogs and I'm not really sold on the RS5 'styling' ....

Probably going to pay off my finance deal and keep the RS4 for a while longer, it's just such a perfect car it's hard to move on. In a year or so 4.7 V8 vantage prices and R8 prices will be down to acceptable levels so might go that route instead.

Over the weekend I mentioned on one of the other topics further up that I had spoken to a couple of dealers about the RS5 and discounts were not on even though they had far fewer orders than for the RS4 at this stage back in 2005. Even though its cheaper than the prices being talked about last summer its still a lot of cash - just think early V8 Vantage for £45k and an S3 for £20k? That's the point though as I see it - depreciation is now so savage on most cars that two second hand cars can be more appealing than one brand new one and need not be more expensive to run as the higher running costs/standing charges can be offset by avoiding the first two years of a new car's depreciation.

It does sound like an RS4 Avant is coming though so fingers crossed for that instead. It should be cheaper too as it does not have the premium for 'coupe styling'.
