New car sales (BMW) are they that great?

It is the one car out there that I would love right now to replace the A6 avant with.

It is coming as a 530xd next year and that does appeal.

It is great as it is not a 4x4, it rides higher than a normal estate, has the best interior I have seen for years, I can get the dog in the back and still drives like a BMW.

Why does it need to ride higher than a normal estate?

So we wait 20 years for BMW to bring 4WD back to the five series and they go and ruin it by making an A6 Allroad. Idiots! BMW has completely lost the plot.

Because it is far easier when you are getting the kids in and out and all their junk and getting my samples in and out of the car too.

Plus I do find that I drive slower in a car that rides slightly higher.

The idea is great but customers should be allowed to choose whether they want:

-no off road height - A6 S Line, RS6 etc;

-half off road height - A6 Allroad;

-full off road height - X5, Q7 for married mothers in mini skirts who flirt with personal trainers;

-full off road height with some actual purpose - low ratio gearbox, Land Rover, M/GL Class Merc etc;

The end.

I really don't get why people get so wound up when something new comes out??

There is always someone that something new will appeal too.

I think the A5 Sportback and 5GT are fantastic ideas, as someone who needs an estate but doesn't necessarily want one, would rather a coupe, they offer something different.

I love the security of 4wd on my second car, but don't really want to be in a Range Rover or a Q7 doing 25mpg. I like the fact that the demo 5GT was showing 39mpg (which is the same as most get on teh 530d 5 estate and the 530xd is only around 3mpg less), and with 245bhp and 600nm giving a 0-60mph time of 6 seconds it never feels short of grunt either.

The seats are to die for, as good as anthing from Volvo and they made the sport seats in my A6 seem really poor, so.... extremely comfy when in it for 10 hours, plus it has all the nice toys like email, internet, decent iGo based nav and a multimedia hub that is almost perfect.

It is not terribly exciting, but it would never feel boring which my A6 avant does at times, but it would be a nice family car that I could get everyone in, including the dog.

So to me it makes far more sense than a Disco I would never take off road, or an RS6 avant that does 14mpg and still handles like a boat, or take your pick on any of the other big buses we buy and then convince ourselves they are 'Sporty' because they have a V8 or V10 under the hood!!

I think Audi have got it far from right on the A6 avant, the active suspension is still very crashy for some reason. To get it right on the avant you need 16 or 17" wheels and some decent eibach shocks, then it sort of makes sense, apart from the useless boot space!

A saloon suits me perfectly. I occasionally need four doors, but I don't have a dog or vast quantities of stuff to cart about so the size/accessibility of a decent sized saloon boot is more than adequate.

And saloons are always that little bit more refined than estates and hatchbacks simply by reducing rear road noise. And, if needed, the boot of a saloon can be more secure than any estate/hatch if the rear seat is fixed.

Nothing like a bit of banter. I have a Disco3 because I live in the middle of nowhere etc etc.

Thing is, having always owned an S series Quattro of some form for the last twelve years I love the combination of sporty handling and 4WD and really appreciate that Audi have all things covered with Quattro (low ratio box apart) so that people can choose.

Having owned a DMS remapped 535d, the idea of that with 4WD really appeals to me but I would want it in sports set up with a low ride height. If BMW choose to offer things as Audi have then, hopefully, we would both be happy!

I agree, if you have no pets and children are grown up the saloon makes good sense especially when the rear seats fold down.

I would obviously never say no to a C63 or M3 in saloon guise, what I meant was when talking about a 530d I would prefer an estate, or in a 3.0tdi I prefer the avant over the saloon, or in the case of these the sportback shape does appeal as it is a bit different.

I agree that an S4 avant is great to have, I was just trying to make the point (obviously not that well! ;) ) that we say the 5 GT and the A5 Sportback are unnecessary cars but are they any more unnecessary than these??

I see people carriers and think "Why??!!" But some people love them, I know a few people that own them and they have no kids?? I just don't get it.

Many hated the X6, I thought for what it was, it was good and my only gripe was parking it.

The New C63 will be somewhat a monster with 570ish BHP and monster torque, the new M5 should contain it with luck but at what price?.:eek: The new M3 is said to be going the 6 pot route for some reason, I only hope it performs well.

I ordered a brochure for a BMW online late Friday evening. 0905 this morning the local dealer rings to let me know he has put the brochure in the post and do I want to come along for a finance quote and test drive.

Now that is fast for a dealer response!

Are sales slow at the moment?

Nothing to do with sales being slow, when you request a brochure we the 'Dealers' get notified and we have to contact you straight away!
