Scotty
...but perhaps this is why the Phaeton cost so much ! High-Tech Car Factory

Mook
Very impressive, but is that not just a massive waste of money?
shao_khan
Guess it depends - if it was build from the ground up to be like that then they may have reduced costs in 'unneccesary' partitioning and construction throughout the plant - I'm guessing that the superstructure is fairly standard - just clever design and marketing again!! cruiser647
Very impressive, but is that not just a massive waste of money? Could probably also make other vehicles with only a small amount of changes and cart programming. Very good PR and shows how clean these places are - not dirty, dusty and oily as many would imagine/expect.
Mook
I'm not saying it's not very clever, or clean - I'm just questioning whether it's a waste of money. PR or not.
Tipex
I'm not saying it's not very clever, or clean - I'm just questioning whether it's a waste of money. PR or not. Yes it is a waste of money, the Phaetons customer base is so small anyway, that I doubt any potential customers would be swayed to the brand by the ability to watch it being built. I'm sure VW have some very clever people behind it, who have managed to invent some sort of PR bollox for how it's not a waste of money, but ultimately, it is. Factories don't need acres of expensive glass, or wood floors, they just need to get the job done.
garcon magnifique
Here's a question. Is the Phaeton really that good? Have they managed to meet the original remit?
cruiser647
Here's a question. Is the Phaeton really that good? Have they managed to meet the original remit? Depends who you ask. I think it's a fantastic car - I wouldn't mind one over an S-class/BM 7 anyday. Not sure of the selling numbers for Germany/Europe - but China can't get enough of them. garcon magnifique
They've been around a while now - there seems little doubt the build quality of the car as a whole is top notch, but is it let down by VAG running gear? Would be interesting to know how reliable they are.

simonb
McCombie had one I think. I wonder how his is doing? "Will send the boy outside to get a picture" SHUDDER! Only been back on here 2 mins and that name is mentioned. As for the factory - well, i showed a lad at work those pics a few months back, and his Dad works at the Bentley factory at Crewe - apparently that's quite similar once inside. Mook
Here's a question. Is the Phaeton really that good? Have they managed to meet the original remit? One of our sales reps used to have a 3.2 V6 and another one has now got a 3.0TDI. Great luxo-barges and very comfortable, but I'd still rather have an A8 or an S class than a Phaeton. Less 'in-your-face' than the S-Class as many customers will just see the badge. Good choice and at the ex-demo prices they 'hopefully' got them at, a bargain! Have they had any issues with them? We do car allowances, not provide company cars. Probs with the 3.2, but none with the 3.0 TDI
cruiser647
I see quite a few of them each day on my commute. At least 3 (so the same 3 each time), and I find they are very distinctive. Especially from the rear with those massive round rear lights. Other trips I've done and I see them too.
Teacake
Depends who you ask.I think it's a fantastic car - I wouldn't mind one over an S-class/BM 7 anyday. I did give some thought to getting a W12. But here's the problem. You don't buy any car like this with the head - if you're using your head you'd buy something far more economical and cheap to run. And personally, if I allow my heart to rule the decision I'm immediately lusting after a Jaaaaag like TDK's. So the Phaeton can't really win for me. It's impressive in a "look-at-what-I-can-do" kind of way, but it's not something I really want so much it hurts.
Mook
A8 4.2 TDI would be the one I'd have out of all of the German luxo-barges
Tipex
Phaeton is a fantastic car, as a used purchase. I'm not sure who it's customer base is really though, as most execs are likely to go for the badge kudos of a Merc or Bmw, as let's face it, most of them are just sales reps who've done well, and they still have that badge snobbery that affects sales reps. I'd have a diesel one over an A8 personally, as I think it's better looking and less pretentious.
Mort
Thats pretty impressive which is what its all about I suppose.... Impressing the customer and competition that they can do some of these things. I am sure some of it is like a giant pissing contest between VAG, BMW and Mercedes. It sure is a statement of confidence and how they see the future... Can't see that happening in the UK.
