Q7 is too much - what next?

My Q7 is proving not to be for me. I like it, but I just don't need the expense of running such a beast. If I try, and i mean try, I can get 28mpg on a run, but more realistically, I get 25/26. Which isnt really enough for me. Economy like that was ok in the Porsche, cos I was in a Porsche, but the Q7 just isnt worth it. And its also becomming more and more of a "tool" and I just don't want that sort of money tied up in a tool.

So I'm thinking get shot of it, and get something older and cheaper that I don't mind abusing (muddy dog and boots I mean) but also something that returns more mpg's when I need it to. The first thing that came to mind was an Allroad, but at a glance these don't seem much more economical. The 1.9/2.0tdi seems to be the one to go for, but the A4 avant and A6 just look so boring!! But perhaps it doesnt matter if its just a tool. The A3 Sportback S-Line looks good when its wearing the RS6 style wheels - I can see myself in one of those!

So, £10k ish, needs to house a small ish dog in the back, and I want it return 40-50mpg's on a run. Shoot.

Some E91 330d manuals coming up for that sort of price now, awesome to drive, will return 36mpg all day long and 45+ on a run.

So much more fun than an A4 or A6.

If not I would get a 2.0tdi DSG S-Line A3 if it has to be an Audi with those requirements and that budget.

Depends what your other criteria are ... Second hand Vectra / Signum V6 TDi - fairly quick, decent spec and our fleet ones have seens some serious mileage with no major issues and certainly seen the dealerships less than the Golfs 2l TDis have.

Mondeo ST estate also seems a good second hand buy.

Older Land Rover - take the dog to more exciting places TD5 should be available - you'll keep the ride height of the Q7 but with lower costs in outlay?
