Mook
What is the point of an AWD A1 other than for the benefit of Audi's marketing?
Scotty
I think it's more they want to do an S1 and I don't think they'd get away with it if they didn't fit quattro. I wonder how much the Haldex etc weighs. Percentage wise on such a small car I guess it could be substantial.
Mook
Marketing again though Scotty. The Focus RS? Megane RS? Both FWD and the handling is surreal for a FWD car. AWD on a car tha size of the A1 has surely got to be a total waste of weight.
Tipex
That would be hilarious, I can see A1 drivers killing themselves left right and centre. The wheelbase is so short it'd be a deathtrap, you'd never catch it if the back stepped out!
cruiser647
Continuation of what the 'brand' stand for. With BMW possibly releasing a FWD BMW.... Audi probably don't want to be seen watering down what they stand for?? Besides, it'll be their USP in the 'quality Mini' segment.
Scotty
Totally agree Mook : Marketing. Its how you sell cars and that's what they want to do. Of course the more small cars they sell the better their average emissions numbers allowing them to do more rampant cars at the top end. If by marketing they draw people into the S1 (like the Abarth model of the 500 has) then it reflects positively on the other A1's etc. Yep it's all marketing but it also makes sense why they're doing it. I wonder if the weight Vs traction will improve the 0-62? I wonder how well it'll sell at probably £21-22k?
Cuprabob
The real reason why they are doind 4wd is to attract the 1 series drivers that don't know which wheels drive the car. By buying one of these they will never be wrong :-)
Mook
But the 1 series is an A3 competitor, surely, not an A1 competitor?
theduisbergkid
I'm surprised the Audi fanatics on here aren't frothing at the flange over this. Personally, it has no appeal at all. Frothy flanges on the other hand...
Mook
Frothy flanges on the other hand... Surely on two hands is better?
cruiser647
But the 1 series is an A3 competitor, surely, not an A1 competitor? BMW should be releasing a smaller than the 1-Series type car and it's due to be FWD. Thereby, possibly' diluting what they stand for.

Mook
Thereby, possibly' diluting what they stand for. Oh please. Don't try and tell me that by making a small FWD car, they're going to "dilute" the "Ultimate Driving Experience" marketing strapline

cruiser647
That's why they have MINI Different models - they might be doing a VAG and allowing competing models from the same 'holding' company.
