billy2shots
A couple of weeks back I looked after my parents dogs while they were away on holiday. I noticed they were scratching a lot and was sure they had some fleas. Mum baths and shampoo's them with special flea stuff and they had this prior to coming to mine (I couldn't treat them again in this way so soon). Fast forward a couple of weeks and the Mrs and I start noticing bites on our child, just one or two at the start but some nights she is getting 5 or 6 bites. We have started to spot them now and its getting more regular, and last night it seemed to explode. We caught 5 on the babies tights and another 3 on my Mrs socks all within 1 hour. I'm sure the little feckers must have laid eggs in the carpet that have now hatched. Over the last week I have sprayed every inch of carpet with spray. This has been done twice, the second with spray that came highly recommend on the tinternet. Having made no obvious difference the Mrs has had enough and covered our entire house in table salt (a method that has been mentioned several times to us). It's getting me so frustrated at the moment and making me feel sick if I'm honest. My question then is has anyone any experience with this problem or know of good methods of treating the issue. I'm thinking of buying a special light that attracts then traps the blighters or should I stop wasting money and get a pest control man in? Andy_Bangle
Drop Luke a PM - He may know what to do, not because he has fleas (maybe he does, who knows?), but because he runs a carpet cleaning business
Luke
Don't believe web hype for a start. Have the carpets pro cleaned and if it's really bad you'll need an insecticide spray. They work but are strong so kids out of the way

They work but are strong so kids out of the way The second spray I bought was an insecticide spray with ITG? 3 initials that apparently mean its an insecticide. Obviously if I could treat it myself then it would be cheaper but I feel like I'm throwing money away at the moment. Plan of attack. Buy some more insecticide spray. Leave that down then shampoo carpets tonight or tomorrow. It could help spraying again I suppose in case these are newly hatched since the last spray. stooH
When I was a kid I stayed on a relatives farm and brought back a bag of sheep wool. A few weeks later there was an explosion of fleas in the house, not nice at all. In the end my mum had to get in rentakil or something similar out and fumigate the entire house. The problem I suspect with your approach is that it's being done piecemeal, you've just got to nuke the fcukers.
Tipex
When we bought our current house the previous owners had a dog, and the house had fleas, luckily we didn't move in as we were having a lot of work done, which included ripping up all the carpets. Once the carpets were up, we bought a load of those bug bomb things that you light and leave, according to the instructions, I should have only used two of them, one upstairs and one down, but instead I put one in every room. We've never had so much as a spider in the house ever since. I realise replacing the carpet would be excessive, but if you can all be out of the house for a day, set a load of those off, then get the carpets cleaned just incase. m4ttm4son
We've never had so much as a spider in the house ever since. What is this wonderous stuff of which you speak? I'd bite the bullet and call in the pest control. Get it sorted once and for all.
billy2shots
We moved in a year ago and I gutted the place, new carpets were put down throughout so they are staying. Just picked up some more spray (igr insect growth regulator was what I couldn't remember). Gonna blast the whole house again now. I didn't want to bomb the place because of the nipper but that is my next stage then have the carpets cleaned after that.
Tipex
I can't remember what it was called to be honest, we bought it from a pet supermarket type place, you put them on a hard non flammable surface, light and retreat, the smoke fills the rooms and (hopefully) kills anything that's left in the room. Did it have the letters DDT anywhere on the candle? I knew there was another reason for not having pets. yuk!
Luke
Fleas, carpet, warm = breeding. Cleaning the carpets is really a way of getting the easy ones out. The machines we use are pumping water out at 600 psi and then sucking the f uckers out with about 10 vacuum cleaners at one go! This will get 90% but of its bad the insecticide will do the rest. On all rental properties now if you have pets you must have the carpets cleaned when you move. When you spray down the insecticide you need to spray the complete area. Grimbold
Talk to your local council - the environmental department. They used to provide a treatment (and a man to apply it) for what I remember was a very small fee. I think that there were two applications, the first to catch the adult fleas and then the second to get the ones which had hatched from existing eggs but before the new fleas could lay more eggs. Otherwise there is an ongoing cycle which you cannot break - unless the new chemicals will kill the eggs too. Be sure to say that there is a young child in the house too.
