macdond
My wifes 2.0 tdi 2007 cabriolet went into Audi Edinburgh last week with an intermittent problem where the car refused to go into 1st gear. They have drained the oil out the gearbox and said they have found metal particles and want to refill it at a charge of £180.00. Needless to say my wife who is a qualified engineer is no happy as the car is still under an audi approved warrany and had complainted about the gearbox after 1 week of buying it. Has anyone had any experience of this type of fault and could give advice. Should we pushing for Audi to replace the gearbox which has only 35,000 miles on it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
patently
If there are bits of metal in the gearbox oil, then it sounds to me like there is a problem with the gearbox, not the oil. Metal comes off gears, it doesn't come out of oil. If all they plan to do is refill, then I'd want either a second opinion or something in writing from Audi UK saying this is appropriate and will solve the problem completely. cruiser647
It is a well know issue of those CVT/Multronic gearboxes. They do go wrong. And a fluid change should be scheduled int he service at and every 40K. (or every 5 yrs) However, your's hasn't even got that far!!! Defo get that in writing - as it shouldn't happen. Oh - never buy an early Multronic gearbox. Tip is OK, Mult is not. They are better now, as they have something called the 7 plate clutch. Early ones had 6 clutches and went wrong. As the dealer if yours has the 6 or 7 plate clutch. They might give you more credit for knowing about stuff too and might not try to fob you off. If they are only going to replace the fluid, get them to clean the gearbox out, replace the fluid AND extend the warranty on it. They should also pay either the fluid cost or most of it at that mileage. Just out of goodwill!

Calm Chris
Its a manual gearbox..... Didnt say that did you? Bless, all that effort from cruisers keyboard and not a jot of thanks.... CYA- It's in warranty, ask for the logic behind simple re fluid rather than a in depth check of the box. Mini particles of metal might be normal wear, bits of tooth cog wouldn't be. Have you asked for exact details to qualify what 'metal' means?
macdond
Update Car is in Lommond Audi in Edinburgh. They refilled the gearbox with new oil, and suprise it hasn't fixed the issue of the car not going into gear. They wanted to charge us for this at which point my wife told them to go fish. Gearbox is now going to be removed from the car for inspection by a specialist according to Lommond, wonder who they are talking about. Can't understand why Audi doesn't just replace the gear box, it is clearly knackered......
cruiser647
Yes, you did neglect to mention the manual bit about the gearbox. Might just be clutch adjustment, flywheel adjustment, cable adjustment or a knackered gearbox. Hope they've given you a courtesy car. That might speed them up too. Good luck. Apologies for not mentioning it was a manual gearbox. I intially thought it might have been a clutch issue but it was only happening with 1st gear. The 1st week we got the car my wife did take it into Lommond Audi however they said they could find no fault and I guess what ever has been wrong has got worse. Anyway the gearbox is now getting removed and sent to specialist for inspection, hopefully they will bin it and put in a new gearbox, fingers crossed. My S4 needed a new gearbox at about 1000 miles, it was an ex demo car, so I assumed it had been thrashed from day one. However it does make me think about how reliable audi are these days. Anyway they have given us a a4 3.0tdi quattro while it is being repaired and wow does it feel quick.....
macdond
Update Had call from Loomond Audi to tell us gearbox specialist has diagnosed damaged synchro rings on the 1st and 3rd gear which Audi has authorised to be replaced which will take nearly two weeks. My question for all you budding gearbox experts, is there any further damage that may have been caused that we should insist that should also been replaced, i.e. actual gears?
