CarMad
So i've been considering a Mac for a while and was waiting for the update iMac. However for what I use if for and when, I'm considering if a better approach would be to get the Macbook Pro 15" and get a big monitor for the office. I spend a fair bit of time downstairs watching TV with my other half and not up in the office where the iMac would be. So my thinking is to have the power where I need it more often both up and downstairs. I'm not going to go for the rMBP as that doesn't have the storage needs that I want even though it does have the fancy screen etc. Plus the Macbook Pro can be user upgraded for memory and storage options which appeals more. Anyone use a Macbook Pro in a similar way, I will be able to do website and photo manipulation work and surfing mainly and very little gaming these days. Probably would get the base 15" and upgrade bits on it.
Mac
My old set up used to be a MBP tied up to a 24" Cinema screen. Cinema screen has loads of USB ports on it as well as power point for the laptop. It was a very workable setup, I used it for a long time. Now, I have a MBP a 27" iMac, mainly cos my storage requirements were getting out of hand and because everytime I took my MBP away my daughter would start whinning as her AppleTV no longer worked. Now, even with that set up I do find myself using the MBP coupled up to the 27" screen, and not using the iMac. The iMac is effectively acting as iTunes server, file server, and Virtual Host. So, yes, screen+MBP is a great set up
Mac
By the way, put in an SSD in to the MBP, and swap out the DVD with a large physical SATA drive, and wow do you have a capable laptop on your hands.

Exactly, thats why I don't want to go rMBP, I was thinking get a 256Gb SSD for the primary and a 1Tb for the DVD drive or 750 Hybrid and expand into the drivebay later. Was going to get a Mini as a fileserver / itunes etc. but that's currently on a homeserver that is doing a fairly good job and sending data offline all the time so that doesn't need to be swapped out yet. Cheers Mac, time for a purchase me thinks then.
NewNiceMrMe
MBP with SSD here, though I do use an iMac in the office. However, I use the MBP for everything at home. We have one of the newer Mac Mini's upstairs, hooked up to 42" TV, and that serves as a nice kids desktop area which I use occasionally - but the proof as to how good the MBP serves me is that I might have used the Mac Mini once in 6 months, and even our youngest will pick up a MBP before going on the Mini with the big screen (and the one she uses doesn't have an SSD). I'll say this though, when we do use the Mini, it's an impressive thing.
CarMad
Decided on the MBP but if I can find someone who can get me the Higher Education discount that would be even better, can get 5% through work so that's not that bad.
Andy_Bangle
At home I have the Win7 box for storage, iMac for surfing and the new iPad for surfing on the bog and iPhone for everything in between. The MBP stays in the office. Decided on the MBP but if I can find someone who can get me the Higher Education discount That could construed as fraud, obtaining goods/services by using a discount that you're not entitled to. Just sayin' Edited July 30, 2012 by Andy_Bangle
