Tipex
Regarding Japanese cars, it's actually true, as there was a kind of 'agreement' that the manufacturers wouldn't make anything over XXXbhp, of course after the first couple of cars that were massively under quoted on power the agreement went out of the window. In fact, I think the only car it ever applied to anyway was the Skyline. My Prodrive WR_Sport Impreza is supposed to be 240BHP, it's got a de-cat and a K&N panel filter which should take it to around 250-260 ish apparently, to me it feels like its got all of its 240BHP but I wouldn't put it above that, despite what the Impreza forum boys reckon! Mac
The 400ish for mine I think may have been slightly suspect anyway, I think they were struggling with traction as one of the first runs put it about 80Bhp or the like.
garcon magnifique
An awful lot of Japanese market Subarus were rated at 276bhp - as were earlier Skylines and Evos. It was mostly nonsense. Mac, if your R34 was a UK car it may have been low to mid 300s out of the box. I would have thought it would have needed NISMO extras - like maybe a stage 1 upgrade at Middlehurst - to top 400. Tipex - I would think your estimate of 240bhp with the mods would be closer to the truth.
Mook
I was wondering if there was anything you can do to sharpen it up and make it a more interesting prospect from a driver's perspective. With the heavy 4.2 V8 further forward than it is on the M3 it's bloody difficult. I also find the ride on them to be harsh - like someone's fitted coilovers without thinking about the consequences, although they say that about a lot of the Audis now. Mac
Was an import - It had a NISMO plate just above the gear stick if I remember rightly. Had a switchable exhaust from 'ok but loud-ish' to 'oh my christ my ears'. Edited August 7, 2012 by Mac
Mook
All Japanese imports (aren't they all!) are under-rated on power because of the 276bhp/280PS domestic "rule".
NewNiceMrMe
All of the early comments in this thread are the one positive of the Z4 - the 35i engine. It's very good when it is standard, but remap it and it is an absolute peach. The sound is lovely and the power delivery when the turbo spins up can wake you up good and proper - and you need your wits about you if you want to keep it straight when changing gear hard. However, it's not a V8 no matter how well it pulls and performs it can't match the soundtrack. I could keep with an M3 comfortably in a straight line and the torque would probably mean I could pull slightly without changing down (not pull away if they changed down, but if we stayed in the same gear I reckon the Z would pull away)....but..... So it's completely frustrating that a car blessed with such a stunning (albeit remapped) engine and sublime gearbox is, ultimately, **** as a drivers package. The M3 beats it hands down. I also think an M3 driver would be very disappointed with a 335i. Not because of the engine - but because it doesn't compare as a drivers car.
