Bumping this thread. I've decided to take the wife and kids to Florida next Easter.

I'm a total novice when it comes to the States, apart from NY, so could do with some guidance.

My boys will be nearly 6 and 9 next April.

Any thoughts on accommodation and what to do would be very grateful.

I fancy a week in the parks and a week on a nice beach doing f all. Ta.

I went twice a couple of years running & stayed in a privately rented house which was massive & much cheaper than any hotel.

All done on t'interweb including flights etc, stayed 15 min drive from central Orlando.

Food outlets are a 'dime a dozen' everywhere in the area, so we never ate in apart from breakfast & snacks/late supper.

My advice would be to get on t'web & find somwhere that suits you & your family and have fun..... You will.

The Universal parks we found MUCH better value for money, & with far more to do and less shops/outlets to rides ratio, either way again have a look online & search the ticket re-sellers web sites for the best deals & BUY BEFORE GOING.

Luke - get a Villa and one that is close to the parks.

They are superbly spec'd with their own pools and games rooms.

If you want a lazy day or a 1/2 day you can come back to the villa and still head to the fireworks etc

Do you REALLY need a week at the beach? You can enjoy multiple days of F-ALL at the many waterparks: we actually went back to Aquatica on a rest day and basically I slept on the Lazy River all day

Get the tickets ordered from here as you get 2 weeks for the price of 1 and ALL waterparks thrown in.

It is BLOODY hectic as you saw from my itinerary but it would be a fun 2 weeks.

My son has already demended we go back as his treat if he does well in his 11+/Grammar school exams

Did you follow your plan pretty much?

yes

Where is the best place to find these villas for rent?

There are a couple websites I know of.

The Dibb is a great resource.

i ended up renting from FloridaVillas (something like that - I will double check +++

Interesting to see this come up again as we are considering going back in March this year. Having stayed on site last time, we are thinking about either the non-resort hotel or villa option this time round. When people have driven in previously, what were the queues like? We will, by necessity, be going at one of the busiest times of the year and I don't really want to spend an hour every morning sitting in the car.

No where near as bad as I feared - but then we did aim to get to the parks as near to opening time as feasible.

The time zones worked in our favour for the first few days and we were up at crack of dawn.

The villa was near enough that one a couple of days at noon we decided to head back for lunch/kip/dip in pool and then we saw how far back the parking lots had filled but since they have the trolleys on continuous circulation that was irrelevant too really as you never have to walk from your car to the entrance only to the nearest pick-up point which usually means know which end of the parked-cars line to walk to

Waiting for the trolley back at closing time can be somewwhat busy if you stay right until then.

At the busiest times of year they have a priority system for Guest Entry.

Top priority is Disney Guests.  Bottom is residents and Day visitors if I remember right.

Christmas is Mental and parks generally always get closed at some point to prevent people going in utilising the priority closure system.

Easter is ok, once Spring break has passed, bit busy otherwise, but I never queued more than 1 hour for parking / transfer to park entry.
