patently
I always read this stuff with a big pinch of salt. Same here. The main worry is that the data is coming from a self-selected group of owners who were willing to pay for an extended warranty. It also doesn't help you choose a newer car because it tells you about cars that have been covered by Warranty Direct for a few years. Looking at the actual list of the worst cars, though, it doesn't really support the headline. Take the worst 5: 1. MG Rover (failure rate: 1 in 13)2. Audi (failure rate: 1 in 27)3. Mini (failure rate: 1 in 40) 4. Saab (failure rate: 1 in 40) 5. Vauxhall (failure rate: 1 in 41) Mini engines are from a JV with Peugot, iirc? So the nationalities of the engines involved are: 1. GB 2. DE 3. FR 4. SE 5. GB Not exactly good news for Germany, but not exactly a rounding condemnation of them, either.

Tipex
I thought the Mini's used BMW engines? Either way, without knowing exactly which engines were most problematic in a range, it's impossible to tell, as not all the engines are from the same place. garcon magnifique
One of these recent Warranty Direct surveys condemned Subarus both for poor reliability and cost of repair. The most casual investigation of the figures showed the truth to be a relatively small number of catastrophic engine failures, almost entirely badly modified, grey import Imprezas sold through non-franchise dealers. Andy_Bangle
I wouldn't believe anything Warranty Direct say!!! That! They bring out a new BS 'press release' every few weeks. They're in the market of selling warranties so want to 'scare' people into buying them. And of course where the engines are built has a big bearing. The desgin might be sound, but sh1tty build might put paid to that. It really is way to variable! Cuprabob
I knew you would find it amusing. Also, you would expect Seat and Skoda to be listed too as they use the exact same engines as Audi and VW

collease
Working for a VW dealer i don't recall seeing many if any engine faliures come through our workshop. Now i know i don't see every vehicle that comes through but i do tend to hear about the major ones. However if you say gearboxs now thats a different story.
