Don't bother.  Slaley Hall is a disgrace.  We stayed 2 nights in a suite there last November at £300 per night and I stay in Premier Inns with better rooms.

I slaughtered it on TripAdvisor and many more people have been doing the same for a year now.

It is now a 3 star hotel at best, yet somehow retains the 5 stars.

p.s. and the food was bloody awful too.  Book somewhere like Close House instead.

Ah boo! Had discounted close house because of poor reviews on trip advisor! Are they to be believed? Really wanted to stay at gadds but the only weekend we can do it it's the miners gala and whole city centre closed on the Saturday so we'd struggle to get home. Used to use the gbym at Slayley and found it great. Few friends have recently been for food also and said it was good.

I'd not looked at TripAdvisor where Close House is concerned, but on previous experiences it was certainly much better than Slaley Hall.

If your friends think Slaley is good, change friends.  Seriously, I gave it 1 star and wrote to the manager too.  No reply.  I was one of a number of guests (wedding) that were appalled with a number of aspects about the hotel.

Their service was dire, the food was average for a main meal and bloody awful for snack-type meals.  The whole place needs a complete overhaul.  I am genuinely not exaggerating when I say that a £29 to £89 Premier Inn room is streets ahead of the suite we stayed in.  WiFi didn't work, carpets were stained and worn, furniture was battered, the room had an awful stale smell and the bathroom was just about the oldest I've encountered.  MrsMe's sister had a suite too and theirs was exactly the same.

It was in jest, obviously. +++

I'm afraid my views on restaurants in the NE are tainted by a lot of bad experience in recent years.  Standards have slipped and too many seem to think that by charging high prices and giving themselves a posh name makes them a good restaurant.

Davanti's in Whitley Bay is excellent.  Never let us down.  But it's not a hotel and not what you'd call a high end restaurant - but it is a league miles above Slaley for food.

Close House was reasonable when we went last.  Decent meal, good service.  Not cheap, and whether it was worth it or not I'm not sure.

Six (at the Baltic) - no.  Just no.  Loud, overpriced, over-rated and full of people who seem to think the view of the bridges is worth the price and experience.  It isn't.

Jamie Oliver has opened a restaurant in Newcastle, not sure if you knew that?  Not tried it but we'll give it a go soon (link here)

Matfen is good.  The problem is the people.  You need a lucky night to avoid the pretentious twats who think their Bentley's entitle them to talk to staff like they're shite and ruin a meal for everyone else.

Oh and you absolutely must ask if a wedding is being hosted on the day you eat/stay.  They are superb wedding hosts but they do allow the party to take over the entire place and it definitely impacts the experience for others.

Mrs T's sister is dating a chap like that, we refuse to eat out with them any more, he's an utter bell end and constantly talks down to waiters/waitresses etc, pisses me right off.

Jamie Olivers in Brighton is actually very good, as a rule, I tend to go for more downmarket but long established family run restaurants rather than the new trendy places charging silly money for poor food that change names every six months.

Seems as though Slaley Hall has really slipped.  I stayed there about 10/12 years ago and everything was superb - lovely room, great staff, good food, fantastic golf course, superbly kept grounds for walking, etc, etc.

Sounds as if nothing has ever been maintained since I was there ten years ago!

Busby, the grounds and the golf course are superb.  I believe the course still hosts championships and is certainly a favourite for golfers.

However, I think if you stayed 10-12 years ago you'd be spot on to say it hasn't changed since.  I think our room would be lucky to have been refurbished in the last 20 years to be perfectly honest.

The concierge was good, I should say that.  Then again we did give him a £20 tip.  He put the X6 in the disabled bays at the rear of the hotel because plenty of cars are packed into the main parking areas and we spotted two getting the typical "whack" off the door of others (it was the reason we tipped him and asked him to look after it).

Sounds like standard de Vere stuff, then.
