max_b
Not quite a mustang convertible but more the family MPV type thingy! Ideally pick up from LAX and drop off at SFO on the way out (unless you know of any companies near to the airports) Any recommendations on who to use for about 16 days hire. Prices seem to vary by quite a bit on the 'comparison' sites. Presumably better to book from here (UK) in advance rather rocking up and asking what you got? Any companies to avoid for excess charges after vehicle return? TIA Max
Andy_Bangle
Stick to hertz or Avis and book direct on a European website as it includes better insurance cover and it's easy to get 10% off the prices with a simple code, then another 10% via cashback sites I always use hertz, if you join their free Gold Club you just pick up the car without having to queue, do paperwork or speak to anyone, it's all done online beforehand. The broker and US websites strip the insurance hence giving better prices. To cover your excess buy EXcess Protection cover before you leave as that will give you peace of mind and save you a packet. I drove SF to LA then onto San Diego and back to SF last May and will be in LA again this May on my way to Vancouver, it's a fantastic route Excess reduction insurance companies: ReduceMyExcess, insurance4carhire, iCarhireinsurance etc If you use cashback sites you can get up to 10% cashback on car hire and up to 22% on the insurance My referral linky: http://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/sarcastrix Also watch out for fuel options as this is the latest scam from all the companies- opt to return the car full is best. One way hire tends to add $100 to price, and big cars and SUVs tend to cheap than small cars and soccer mums cars (mpv). max_b
Cheers for the advice AB, appreciated. I did notice the 'gas guzzlers' were as cheap or even cheaper than the smaller stuff. I'll probably get the biggest engined monster I can find to carry the family and luggage, just worried it might end up being a proper people carrier type thing ie Chysler Voyager! Lol We are probably gonna try and fit in Disney at Anaheim (LA) whilst we are that side. Only issue seems to be finding ticket or package deals. Even the travel agents here are struggling as its not as popular is Orlando, where deals are on all the time.
Andy_Bangle
Where you looking at going, Disney California Adventure Park, the Disneyland Park or both? It's just as easy to buy tickets online from ATD or from around LA or LAX at the tickets booths. The official Disney hotels are really expensive - it's half the price to stay at Long/Huntingdon/Newport Beach(s) but I guess it depends on how much time you want to spend there, this is a good guide. Back to car hire, don't bother using any of the off-site companies. After 14+ hours of travel just to get to LAX, then 2-3 hours getting through immigration & baggage reclaim, the last thing you want is another hour on a bus touring the car parks and rental companies just to save a few quid Edited January 29, 2016 by Andy_Bangle
Scotty
it's half the price to stay at Long/Huntingdon/Newport Beach(s) That's what I'd do I spent 3 month in Newport Beach and we would pop up to Anaheim for baseball/football etc. Much nicer locations on the coast than near Disney. NewNiceMrMe
I've used Dollar twice when in Vegas. I couldn't fault them and to be honest I thought the experience was all a little too good to be true! I recall thinking that I must have been billed incorrectly or that they thought I was a mystery shopper each time because of how well I was treated. Dollar are owned Hertz Car rental in the USA is so cheap, weekly rental on a big shitty American car is around £20 a day. It's double the cost in Canada so I'm just glad the CAN$ is still worth nothing. Edited January 30, 2016 by Andy_Bangle
max_b
Quick update on this. Just got back this weekend from a fantastic 2 1/2 weeks over on the west coast enjoying 25/30 degrees temperatures, Disney, site seeing etc. Hire car ended up from - www.uscarhire.com - site aimed mainly at non US/Canadian residents with cracking rates, cheaper then any of the other company's I found, even using the same underlying provider, quite transparent terms/insurance requirements etc. Even had the facility to print all paperwork beforehand so I didn't even need to speak to anybody/queue up when we landed at LAX car rental. Scanned the barcode/driving license, etc, walked over to the car park and was told pick any car you want - they keys are on the dash. Ended up in a brand new (3 miles on clock) 2016 Dodge Town and Country, served us perfectly for our trip, electric doors, captain seats, sirus hifi, the kids loved it! It didn't quite have the performace of the V8's that were everywhere but we happily did 1500 miles and it cost less than a $200 in fuel They (uscarhire) offer all types of cars and I would definately recommend them. Other reviews of them are similiar and very positive
Andy_Bangle
West coast is amazing isn't it, you can see why the PCH is one the worlds greatest drives. I'm back there in May so will checkout that rental company
