Family Holiday with Kids

Where to the kids sleep?

We have been staying in Villas and Apartments with the kids up until this year but the wife wants to go to a hotel and put our feet up. But nearly everything we can find has the kids staying on a sofa bed of some sort unless we double the budget and even that is no guarantee.

Is this what everyone gets the kids to do?!? Am I just being tight or should I just let them sleep in a sofa bed? Kids are only 4 and 6 so still young enough to do that just wasn't sure what everyone else did these days?!?

Top tip. Pine Cliffs in Portugal. You get an apartment with hotel accoutrements. Apartment is cleaned every day, proper big beds, loads of pools, a stack of restaurants that are good, room service if you wish (although it isn't great). We went last year and are going again in May. Whether we stump up the extra to go in school holiday time next year remains to be seen!

Lots of hotels do adjoining rooms now ... we just lock the "kids" bedroom from the inside and leave the do not disturb sign on permanently and we all use our door (they are only 11 and 8 so always with us).  The teenagers now also get their own twin room and so far we have always had 3 rooms in  a row - I knock to say we are off to brekkie but generally now leave them to it (16 & 17).

We have been to Portugal the last few years and the Pine Cliffs was an option but we fancied somewhere different Majorca being another option.

Kids are pretty young to be autonomous and a couple of hotels do have the option but they are either rubbish or very expensive and my Accountant wife doesn't want to spend £5k for the 4 of us.

£3-4k was the budget as we want to go again and do other things this year, going in May-June as our kids get 2 weeks then.

We always get family rooms or suites.

family duplex has sofa beds or beds downstairs and adult ensuite bedroom upstairs, or else double bedroom family suite

Interestingly (okay maybe not!) my wife was musing about this option recently: having the privacy of your own villa with your own pool but HSBC got the amenities of a hotel (food, cleaning etc)

It depends where you stay.  We stayed on the East coat last time, in a German resort. Not wife is half German and I speak the lingo, so that was an advantage.  This time we're in Alcudia, so more tourists, but I never admit to being from the UK when I go on holiday ;)

We stayed in Malta 2015 and I was a bit disappointed, TBH.  Some beautiful old towns, but it was just a bit, well, dull.  Some brilliant climbing, biking and caving, but that's not everyone's thing.

Best holiday yet (we're talking just me an not-wife here, no kids at Easter) we did was last year on Gran Canaria.  I spent way too much but the http://www.sheratongrancanaria.com/en was epic.  Fantastic biking and coasteering as well :)

That's just for the two of us, half board again.  Did it this year through a friend of ours who has set up as a travel consultant - she was absolutely brilliant.  We gave her a budget and a brief and she came back with a few choices.  Took ALL of the hassle out of finding something myself and it was just as good a price.  Previously we've found a decent hotel and then sorted flights separately.  Helen did the whole lot for us.

I always sort car hire myself through www.carrentals.co.uk (and yes, it works with www.topcashback.co.uk as well). I was a couple of weeks late booking this year, so it was £95 for the week all in.  If you book far enough in advance, you can find some wicked deals.  Last time we were in Ireland I managed to get a Fiat 500 Lounge (could have been anything, tbh!) for Eur17 for two days, including insurance.  Absolutely nuts!

We are on the east coast for all the reasons Mook mentions.

We will hire a car and dump the coach over and it will give us flexibility to get about as the kids are too young to want to sit around a pool all day. Hotel seems ok the proof will be in the pudding. We could have gone for a better place but it had none of the fun bits for the kids, and they don't really want a full on corporate 5* hotel and a single pool so we have compromised.

Price £3500 for 10 days in half term all inclusive (we don't need it but that's all the offered), all in and we could have paid double easily its a buoyant market. We will see how it goes and we might go back to villas next time we will see. +++

There's something great about being on holiday and not having to even think about what food you're going to eat and where you're going to get it from.  We save that for the two weeks we go camping in the south of France in the summer :)

My wife maintains that it's not a holiday unless she doesn't have to think about food, making beds, making breakfast, tidying up, etc etc

That basically means no villa's, no camping etc and only hotels. Add in never sharing a room with the kids and it means cheap breaks have gone out the window.

In fact I think I need to change a few rules!!
