AZURES3
After having to get out of a space, in my A4 CAB, with cars parked all around me requiring lots of full lock etc and about a 30 point turn. My power steering now sounds odd and the steering feels dangerous like one minute its assisted then for a split second it is not, it like driving a dodgy old arcade game If this turn out to be major issues this will probably be my last Audi I am not paying this sort of money for nothing. s4dreamer
I think I read somewhere on here or the old AS.net that it's not good for power-steering to be held on or near to full-lock for extended periods. If you listen when the steering is at or near full lock, you can hear the noise from the ps pump - that's when it's labouring. That said, though, it shouldn't give up just because you've struggled to get out of a tight space - unless, of course, you're doing it regularly. If it's still feeling/sounding odd when you next use the car, I'd get it into the dealers for a check-up - probably sooner rather than later. Try steering the car with the engine off if you want to see why
AZURES3
I just called Audi Customer Services, without much pushing the advisor admited there is a known issue with A4CAB steering racks and that Audi have a fix for LHD cars and the RHD fix will be available very soon ??????? They advised calling Audi Roadside and asking for a dediccated Audi technician who will check it out. AZURES3
Ari
Terrific. So I've got dodgy steering and dodgy coil packs to look forward to....?
AZURES3
I am pretty f*****g far from happy this is the most expensive Audi/Car I have ever bought and this is quite a major component. Time to buy Japanese I think AZURES3

AZURES3
Agreed I just find the more money I spend on a car the less tolerance I have. AZURES3
Ari
Quite agree. £30K car with a steering fault and they're working on a fix. Not acceptable. But still wouldn't buy Japanese, no matter how tediously reliable they are! Sure it'll get sorted mate. Let us know how you get on.
AZURES3
Mobile Audi technician truned up within 2 hours of the call, a top bloke and very polite. He agreed after a 2 minute drive and said it is an issue Audi are aware and a fix is on the way but it maybe a different issue. He advised either to let them take it in now or to take the next booking with minimal use. My nearest trusted dealer cannot look until Saturday so its booked in for then with a loan car. I am not happy about not being able to use my car properly or the fact that the fix is not available a I am worried it will stay with them for a month. If this is the case I am getting rid of it AZURES3

Ari
Thats less good. You'd think that on anything steering or brake related they'd want the car in ASAP, if only from a liability risk point of view. Imagine if you crashed the car tomorrow and blamed the steering having reported it faulty to them. Even if it wasn't that which caused the accident they'd have a hard job proving it... AZURES3
I have spoken to 1 of the customer service managers and they are now picking the car up at 6pm tonight and will also be dropping off a hire car. I said whats the point as the dealer wont look at it until next weekend, she said trust me they will as they pay for the hire car after 48 hours I will keep you updated. SteveCab
i took my car in for a check as it was making a funny noise when i reversed, it seems its the power steering pump. when under full lock and reversing it doesnt like it and makes a irritating rubbing kind of noise. The audi mechanics couldnt re-produce the problem, so i took one out fo a quick spin and managed to get it to make the noise again, which is when the mechanis suggested it was the p/s pump. If the noise persists ill take it back, but it only does it occasionally when reversing with full or nearly full lock on
AZURES3
Stevecab Trust me this is not just a noise, it feels like the steering wheel is in no way connected to the wheels unless you are going straight. The wheels were snatching and grabbing the steering wheel turning, whatever the speed. It was quite scary to drive, the Mobile Audi techincian only dorve it 100m and could tell it was very wrong After my latest call with AUDI it appears that power steering/sterring rack issues are very much a known issue in Germany. Expect an A4CAB recall at a dealer near you soon. AZURES3

AZURES3
ARI I will keep you updated on the new racks, if they come out in the next 2-3 weeks I would get them to fit one during the PDI on your motor. A brand new Vectra was dropped off last night, its a vauxhall but has loads of toys too many infact for the LS version inclusing cruise control as standard. My car was picked up this morning, the guy was very careful with it including alloy protetcors to stop the straps scratching the alloys. Ari
Cheers Az, I'd appreciate that. I wonder how long this issue has been known about, and therefore whether mine having been built this year might have the redesigned rack already... When was your Cabrio built? Same for the coil packs, presumably if they discovered this fault at the end of last year then they won't have carried on fitting potentially faulty ones surely? Would they....? Bit of a worry being about to take delivary of a brand new and not inexpensive car with at least two known potential problem areas...
AZURES3
No worries I will keep you updated, FYI my car was built August 2002. Not sure about the coil packs fingers crossed. I dont think you will have the revised rack as AUDI say the revised one is only available for LHD cars in the last 2 weeks. AZURES3
Ari
Arse. Thats not so good. Might be worth a post on Audi-world, see if anyone there has had an issue with this? Not seen anything mentioned so far...
pepsi32
Can't turn to the darkside and buy Japanese...you'd hate it forever. Why not trade the car up for a newer derivative or step up and get some serious chucky (finance debt!). I nearly bought a S3 that'd had £5k mods and was running about 300lbft but opted for S4 instead as same performance near enough as standard with a view when I got bored (about now!) I can take a 6hr drive South to AMD for £850 can get nearly 400lb. Ride home will be about 3hrs to North East! Keep the faith...

pepsi32
6mnths D'oh! U seriously want to kick off with yer main dealers. UK law is 3 strikes and they're out remember for the adopted US "lemon laws". Not saying yer've got a lemon but I once had a new AX-GT about 14years ago and had nowt but bother from Day 1 - ended up getting a new car which got torched by joyriders who couldn't get past all me fancy security! S cars will need bit more checking I guess than normal A3 and A4 runabouts.
