Sven
If so, how easy/hard was that? Any tips 'n tricks you wanna share? I'm thinking about getting these web page
JoeNobody
I haven't taken the one my car out but I do have a spare that I took apart to see how easy it was. It was pretty easy, just clips and a couple of screws. I don't think these would be available if you needed a specialist to fit them. No promises, but I might be able to get a couple of pictures. audia8s2
Hi Sven, I haven't on the A8 but I had the dials out of my S2 though, it's not a bad job, just have to be a tad careful with the gauges as their quite delicate (apparently the speedo dial alone for the S2 is £350 from the dealer!!!!) and making sure there's no dust or marks inside the console, for when you put it back together, nothing worse than putting the whole lot back and noticing there's a great thumb print behind the perspex !!! Obviously the steering wheels got to come off and if it's like the S2 there's a couple of screws above the steeing column that hold the console in, should be able to lift it out and unplug all the cables, then it's a case of half a dozen screws holding the actual gauge unit inside the console. It may be different on the A8 though, I can have a look in the Bentley manual tonight for you (unless PaulW beats me to it of course !!!)
audia8s2
Bentley manual quote:- Sorry I'm having trouble with the pictures Sven. Removing - Using steering column adjustment, pull steering wheel out and down as far as it will go. - Push in both covers (arrows) and remove from instrument cluster. (these are the ones just above and either side of the steering column, with a "waffle" pattern on, to the right of the computer check button and left of the trip reset button. - Remove screws at right and left. - Remove instrument cluster toward front. - Cut cable ties on back side of instrument cluster. - Release retaining tabs on harness connectors and disconnect connector. Looks pretty simple Sven and result, because of the A8's electric steering column, extend it as far out as it goes and to it's lowest position and you don't need to remove the steering wheel
PaulW
No need to take the steering wheel off.... First, remove the instrument cluster. Adjust the steering wheel as far out and and far down as it will go. Push in both covers in picture below and remove from instrument cluster. Push in covers to remove them, exposing hex screws. Remove the two 4 mm hex screws. Remove the instrument cluster towards front. Cut the cable ties on the back side of the instrument cluster. Release the retaining tabs on harness connectors (3) and disconnect connector. These connectors are very similar to the Nav Plus 26 pin connector. The release must clear the tab, then rotate it and the connector will pull out of the instrument cluster. I've seen those rings in somebody's 00 A8.....looks great! I would do it. When you super glue them on be very careful to place them on the dash correctly the first time! Been busy moving everything! pw
Sven
Okay, cheers guys! The taking out bit shouldn't be too much of an issue, it's the taking apart bit I'm a tad worried about, but it should be doable I guess. IMO the perspex doesn't come off, so I reckon you have to squeeze the rings in from behind. I'll take some pics when I get around to it. First have to order them, I think I'll go for the ones from tachodesign.de (the most expensive, but they look best imho).
audia8s2
Your right the perspex doesn't come off but if it's like the S2 you should be able to get the whole instrument case out of the car and remove the dials separately from the housing from the rear, so it shouldn't be too tricky. PaulW
If you can put on S8 mirror caps, you can take the instrument cluster apart.....if you do this, then take pictures and we'll post the procedure on audipages....I know it's easy to take it apart....but never done it. After seeing them, I wanted to do it....but haven't done it yet.....but I am now in possession of all my tools! And do I have a lot of tools! Sven
Just got a reply from the guy on eBay. Linky He says they're high grade polished Aluminum, they reach exactly until the dial, and the rim is 4mm wide. Shipping is free. That makes 'em about half price of the others above... Hmm. PaulW
Hey, if you're going to buy a set from this guy for 35 euros, can you get two and ship one to me? I'll send you the money or if you want, I can get a Bently manual for $65 U.S. and send that to you. pw

No probs if not, in that case I'll order the eBay ones for Paul and me. Having said that, I'm still a bit in doubt whether to get the eBay rings or the other ones... A8_Tony
Sorry Sven, no joy. The chap I had in mind has just had his face smashed in by some thug. So unfortunately has to have the left hand side of his face rebuilt!! Not sure about the rings, I quite like the tachoring version......albeit slightly thicker than the TT style, I think they might suit the 8 better. Sven
Oh my God... That's awful! What can I say? Wish him all the best, hopefully he recovers well... Did they catch the thug? Let's hope they'll throw away the key! As for the rings I'm a bit in doubt between tachodesign.de (first pic) and the eBay ones. Personally I'm not to keen on the thick ones. Hmm... Sven
Paul found some others, which are even better imho. Naturally they're even more expensive... But they do look good no? These are going to be the ones methinks.
cruiser647
Many of the newer higher model VW and Audi's now come with the chrome rings on the dials. The Passat V models come with them.
