Laffer
Urm... dunno if that is the correct spelling of demographic?! I'm a nosey bugger and would be interested in finding out what others do on this board for a living. Hey lets face it A8/S8 motors are not that cheap to buy and run. I am an IT manager for my sins (and not a well paid one after the last couple of years dolldrums in the industry). I am sort of guessing that a lot of you are self employed/entrepreneurial or executives of some description. Or perhaps just real petrol heads and the only thing you spend your money on is the car?! Some of the stories about purchasing relatively new cars (ie costing a proverbial arm and leg) I find quite spine chilling (spending THAT much money on a car). All get rich quick schemes welcomed Laffer.
Huss
Laffer, Not a bad guess in my case. I'm a director of an IT consultancy, all my collegues are well into their cars also..not Audis though. Maybe its an IT thing and a love of "Vorsprung durch Technik"? SneakyMcC
I'm a Goldsmith by trade. But have spent the last 13mths selling loose diamonds for a UK importer. Before that I ran a diamond jewellery dept for the 2nd largest jewellery importer in the UK. Who happened to be a client of mine when my own business was my only employment (89-99). Now I am a fussy bsatdard when it comes to who I make jewellery for About to go and run another dia/jwlly dept for another former client of mine (Sept 1st), but I might get back to doing my own thing again... Nice having the regular money (more than I was earning on my own too!), but working for others again kinda sucks... My 8 is old and keeps me skint Paid just under £14k for it when it was just 4 and a bit yrs old, so it was only Mondeo money
Botang
I'm a glorified taxi driver, chauffeur if you like. 24 years old and am a sucker for having nice cars. I have always bought cars that come fast as standard where as my friends tend to tune theirs up. I am fascinated by how the A8 drives and the performance it gives for such a large car. Other cars assume they are faster because mine is bigger, but oh no, get the hell out of the way an A8 is coming through!
Skanksy
Hello Laffer, me, well i'm just a good old fashioned gasman. I get called in to finish off after Transco's gas emergency service have repositioned gasmeters etc. Doesn't pay to bad. Need to earn good money to fill the S8 up! I once had a Granada Cosworth 2.9ltr 24v which i thought was the dogs bo*locks, then had boring company cars. Now i am self employed and can have what i want (money permitting). I don't want to be ostrecised but i would love to get my hands on a Jag XKR, thats a proper pussy magnet, shame i'm an ugly fu*ker though, regards, Paul P.S. Maybe TVR tuscun, all that BHP and no traction control or ABS. Skiddy underpants stuff!
Sven
I tell other people what to do... (I.e. business consultant). Fell in love with the S8 not too long ago, but it was indeed love at first sight. Sometimes I try to be sensble, and think I should sell it and get a Golf instead, but that thought quickly vanishes when I get behind the wheel, or even look at the car... Today it was parked in a car park at the hospital, and it struck me again how low and mean this car looks, compared to all the other cars. Suddenly the whole lowering issue seemed a bit silly again... (doesn't mean diddly though, I haven't changed my mind).
Sven
[ QUOTE ] i would love to get my hands on a Jag XKR [/ QUOTE ] Tried that before I got the S8. Both XJR and XKR, since I always liked these cars - and still do. However, they're not only a tad cramped for me (even the XJR with sunroof leaves me little headroom), but the S8 handling made me forget all about them. I made my mind up right after the testdrive in the S8. I'm not in need of any 'magnets', but today I had a very animated talk with a drop-dead gorgeous female Audi driver. Smart too, fast driving, and into Audi's...

Mort
I'm an IT project manager - (Yes another IT nerd...) I've had my A8 for 2 years... I've been a serious car nut for years... Tuned Jap turbo stuff, couple of Porches etc.... But along came 2 kids, mid life crisis was looming and suddenly it was time to "put those childish toys behind me" and get a sensible family run about instead... I went through an agonising process of drawing up lists of desireable features for a 4 door car that would do the job and be appealing.... e.g. Must be rear wheel or 4 wheel drive, fast, safe, well equipped, cool etc etc... The list became quite short and in the end there was only one car.....
PaulW
This is my third Audi that I've owned....first a 87 5000SQ (100 series)....then a coveted 91 200q with the 20 valve motor...now the 97 A8. I've been in the commercial nuclear power industry since I failed out of college and went into the U.S. Navy's nuclear power program.....served on a submarine. I've graduated to my own business about 5 years ago and I represent two companies selling their products and services to the nuclear industry.... Here's one that makes very specilized HVAC equipment . It's incredible what they do.... Here's the other one that does electric motor repair. I would send you to their web site, but it's hideous....this is just one page that I put together for a seminar we give. I buy high end Audis that depreciate rapidly.....I get them after they took the big hit.
cruiser647
I am also an IT 'boy'. Work in PC Support (2/3/4th line + anything else!). Been in this game for 10 yrs since BAe kicked me out when the Berlin Wall fell over and the demand for World Arms dropped! Work for a MAJOR Swiss drugs company. Have also got an extra job selling PC bits on Saturdays AND build PC's for some of the bods at work - for a tidy profit. Got to keep the A8 on the road somehow!!! Like PW, I buy these cars AFTER someone else takes the depreciation hit! Never had a new car (am I missing anything?) Have had large cars with either PACE or GRACE (sometimes neither), that can cruise quietly at high speed. My friends always had fast hatches etc, but I have never been taken by them. Now I have a car with both, that will eat them for breakfast! They call it the Tank.

Mutley
Another geek here too... I'm 37, was in the armed forces for 7 years, then an IT manager, then set up my own business selling 'contact centres' to dot coms and SME's. Sold that business to a larger comnpany then became a contract consultant for contact centres and IP telephony. I've always liked cars for their technical ability (instead of magnetism) and I tend to get on with colleages who also like them. I started with the mk1 Golf GTi, then mk2 (missed the mk1), then had a financial downturn so drove a Capri 2.0s, then a Vectra SRi, Mk3 Golf VR6, Porsche 996 C2, Omega MV 3.0, BMW 323Ci, Audi S8, Audi RS4, Audi S8, then the current S8. The sheer engineering brilliance of the S8 with the spaceframe and Torsen 4WD, not to mention an engine with a superb BHP-per-litre figure keeps me interested (and broke), but hey, its worth it. Chris_B
As I'm "between 8s", am I allowed to post here? I'm yet another IT person. Started out as a programmer writing DOS database stuff like company secretarial automation, warehouse stock control and the likes. Got into comms and email before the Internet became a big thing, and saw what was coming. I half own my company and I'm sort of a general business and techie guy. I should do more business and less tech, but I enjoy the techie stuff too much to give it up.

Sven
"I sold my soul to Vorsprung durch technik" Oh dear... The withdrawal must be unbearable! What are you driving now? PS: with all the IT wizzards here, how can I get my old Dell Inspiron notebook to run XP? It keeps on hanging at 3/4 of the install. (It came with ME, but no-one could get it to work with WiFi). Fun part is it won't go back to ME either...
cruiser647
From what I know, most duff installs of XP are due to memory glitches. If you have extra memory, remove it and try again. Then put in some newer stuff. What does the PRE-XP INSTALL guide say?
Sven
What's a PRE-XP INSTALL guide? As for memory, it has 2x 128 mb chips - it came with that... IIRC it stopped installing at sys drivers (a display driver I think). I put it aside a while ago, since I got seriously fed up with it... Now - with XP install 'undone' - it starts up in DOS mode, and reports it can't find config.sys, and a few other *.sys files are missing/damaged (nlsfunc.sys, keyb.sys, display.sys and ifshlp.sys). Would it be advisable to do a format and start from scratch? (I have no install disk, just windows ME/XP). I fear I might need some specific drivers, but which ones, and how do I get them on a non functioning notebook? (the new one has no 3.5 diskette, so the only way to transfer them would be CDR, if I get that going). It's a Dell Inspiron 7000 PII btw.

[/ QUOTE ] Umm, the RS 6... I'm keeping the RS 6 until the 8 arrives, and I've already agreed the amount the dealer's giving me for it (so long as I don't bend it or have another blue paint incident...). The sig text is because I've just about become "Audi Boy", can't see myself everr being without one now. Perhaps it should read "Audi owns my soul"?
